Kylie's P.O.V
"I don't know! He just ran away!" I scream into the phone at Summer. "I didn't mean to hurt his feelings...well maybe a little..but I didn't know he would just blow up!"
"Kylie! Ugh. Have you tried texting him?" Summer replies in a worried tone.
"Only for about two weeks," I say flatly into the phone.
"Be serious. I meant since the whole scene that happened today. I've seen a few videos of it online already, but what did he mean by, 'I will fix it'? This could be bad."
"If I knew I would tell you Summer. I feel so stupid, I can't believe I did that. I need to make sure he's okay," I say, my voice cracking and my eyes filling with tears. Summer is silent on the other end of the phone for a few seconds.
"Then lets go make sure he is okay," She says, nonchalantly.
"What?!" I say, surprised.
"Yeah, I'll get Tyler and we can all meet up. We can stop by Ryder's house."
"That sounds great. Will you pick me up in 10?" I say, feeling a bit relieved that I can do something other than sit here.
"Yep. See you soon!" Summer says before hanging up the phone.
I get up and throw on a hoodie, before telling my mom that I'm going to my friends house for a bit. Summer and Tyler arrive on time, and I get into the back seat of Tyler's car. We are all silent on the way to Ryder's house, and I can't help but feel nervous. As we pull into the driveway, we all notice that there are no house lights on, and it just creates such an eerie look.
We get out and walk onto the porch, and I stop in my tracks when I see the movies I left on his porch a few weeks ago. It's like my entire brain just stopped working mid thought. but it quickly started back up again.
"Um, guys?" I say to Tyler and Summer, who were knocking on the door and talking quietly.
"Yes?" Summer says while peering through a window.
"I know this might sound strange..but I don't think Tyler has been living here, at least for a few weeks now. I left these movies on his porch a while back," I say, and pick up the movies.
"Wait a second. I remember seeing a bunch of cars at his house a few weeks ago too. Cop cars and everything. I think it was the same day that all those rumors started about him," Summer says, glancing at Tyler, who looks away and rubs the back of his head.
Suddenly something seemed to click in all of our heads at the same time. Without speaking, we run back into the car and drive down to the social services office. Tyler walked in first and starts to ask the lady at the counter about Ryder.
"Do you know if Ryder Kent has been here a few weeks ago or is in the foster care system?" Tyler asked the woman.
"I can't reveal information about-wait a second, did you say Ryder Kent? He was reported missing only a few hours ago. Do you know of his whereabouts?" The woman replies, looking at each of our faces.
My eyes grow wide, and we stand there in shock. "Missing..?" I say quietly, as we walk out of the office, thanking the lady. This is all my fault. I drove him to leaving, to running away.
The lady had given us his foster home address in pity, so we began to drive down there. Somewhere along the way I began to cry, and Summer must have heard me sniffling because she turned around and told me it would be okay.
"No, it won't," I say, so quiet it was barely audible. "It's my fault he ran away. He could be in danger because of me. He will never forgive me.." I rub the back of my neck where the tattoo is, and I feel overwhelmed with sadness.
"Kylie, you didn't know. You were hurt. You did something you weren't proud of, but we all do. Right now we just need to be strong and hope he is okay." Tyler calmly says, as he drives slower in order to find the house.
I nod my head even though he can't see me. We pull onto the side of the road next to a rickety little house. "This is it." Tyler says, as we all silently judge the house. "Maybe you should stay in the car Summ-" Tyler starts to say to Summer, but he is cut off when she slaps his arm lightly.
"I am not staying in the car!" She says to him, then opens the door and gets out of the car. Tyler raises his eyebrows, and follows her. "Someones feisty tonight," Tyler mutters teasingly to Summer.
"Guys, this is serious!" I say and they both stop laughing and nod their heads. Summer rings the doorbell, and a few seconds later we hear the door unlock. A lady with obviously dyed hair that in no way matches her dull and dry skin, answers the door. She looks at us, and before any of us get a word out, she screeches, "BILL! HEY BILL, THERE ARE TRICK OR TREATERS AT THE DOOR!"
We stare at her as if she is crazy, because first of all, it is February. Second of all, there is now a loud and unpleasant ringing in my ears. Soon a grouchy man that looks like he is in his late 40s appears. "Nancy, it is not halloween. Go make some frozen pizza, it's the only thing you're good at."
'Nancy' walks away and Tyler clears his throat. "Excuse me, but does Ryder Kent stay here?" The man looks at Tyler and laughs in his face, taking us all by surprise. "Oh, that little sh*t? Thank the devil he is gone. His dumb*ss finally got the message."
For about the third time tonight, we are all beyond shocked. "Sorry, but uh, are you Ryder's forster parent?"
"Was. Till he finally packed his sh*t and left. The names Bill by the way."
I couldn't take it anymore. "I don't know who the f*ck you think you are, but you have no rights talking about Ryder like that. He at least has more dignity than you have hair. You better straighten your sh*t up before I beat your *ss," I yell in his face with pure disgust in my voice.
"Excuse me little girl-" He started to say, an angry expression on his face. But before he finishes, I punch him across the face, hard. he stumbles back, and we all run for the car. "Hey, get back here you little b*tches!" He yells and runs after us.
We get in the car quickly, and as we drive away, we see Nancy come out of the house. The last thing I hear before I am out of range, is her saying, "Did the trick or treaters leave?"
