The next day at school, Kalina comes in the building and everyone stares at her. Kalina walks to her locker to get her books and Mya walks up her.
"You're late." Mya said.
"No. Class starts at 9:30. It's 9:15."
"Well you're late to being early. Come on."
They both walk to Mr. Steele's class and a student walks up to them.
"Hey Kalina, you gonna beat Harper's ass again?"
"Fuck off Leila." Mya said.
They get to Mr. Steele's classroom and the girls are there.
"Stacey, what are you doing here? You're not in this class."
"I am at the moment. Sit down."
Kalina and Mya sit down.
"I'm guessing everyone is talking about last night?"
"Yes, and you know what happens when people talk about this stuff right?" K'lynn said.
"Yeah. Principal Davis hears about it and starts asking questions. Wait, where's Bianca?"
"Her party's tonight, she still has some stuff to do." Stacey said.
"Anyway, if Principal Davis asks you any questions, tell her nothing happened and that they're just rumors." Mya said.
"Like she's gonna believe that. Since the whole thing with Sophia, she's been suspicious about us. She basically called us out at the assembly remember?" Kalina said.
The bell rings and everyone comes inside the classroom. Mya and Stacey leave.
"Kalina you're in my seat." Kyle said.
"Oh sorry." Kalina says as she gets up.
"Hey, are you alright?"
"I'm fine."
"What's the deal with you and Harper?"
"Don't worry about it." Kalina says as she goes to her seat.
Mr. Steele comes inside the room.
"Good morning everyone. Thank you for coming in and taking your seats."
Mr. Steele looks around.
"No Bianca today K'lynn?"
"No. She has some things to take care of." Sophia said.
"OK. Just so you guys know, I am aware of the rumors surrounding the school."
Everyone looks at Kalina.
"Hey, eyes up here."
Everyone pays back attention to Mr. Steele.
"Now, these rumors are my inspiration for the lesson today."
Harper walks in and everyone starts whispering and giggling.
"Miss Sanax you're late. Do you have a note?"
"No."
"Go to the attendance office." Mr. Steele says frustrated.
Harper rolls her eyes and leave.
"Anyway, here's a quick question for you guys. Why do you think the people in our generation today gossip?"
"For entertainment." Roosevelt said.
"Thank you Miss Meyers."
"We live in a world were reading books is boring, so we spread rumors because rumors don't require any sort of rules." Corey said.
"Rules? What do you mean by rules?"
"Like when you're writing a story, there has to be rising action or falling action or a dynamic character or a static character. With gossip, all that doesn't matter. Especially when you just spread what you hear it from someone else and they go tell other people."
"Thank you Corey. Anyone else?"
Everyone remains quiet.
"Ok. Now raise your hand if any of you have ever started rumors before."
Roosevelt, Kyle, and others raise they're hands.
"Now raise your hands if you've ever had rumors spread about you."
Candy and Kyle raise their hands and other students look at Kalina.
"OK. Now what I want to teach you today is kinda what Miss Meyers was saying. We start rumors for entertainment, which leads me to my next question. What entertains you guys?"
"Basketball practice." Kyle said.
"Gymnastics." Candy said.
"Taking walks." K'lynn said.
"Exactly. There's plenty of other things we can do to entertain ourselves. Ruining someone's reputation doesn't have to be one them. When someone starts a rumor about you, what is your reaction like?"
"Angry." Kyle said.
"Confused." Candy said.
"Why confused Miss Thompson?"
"Because normally when people spread rumors about you, you don't really know the person, like why would you wanna start a rumor about someone you don't really know?"
"Very good Miss Thompson. Especially because you and Roosevelt are on the cheerleading team and rumors are nothing new to you guys am I correct?"
"Yeah?" Roosevelt said.
The bell rings and everyone gets up and leaves.
"Miss Watercolor. A word with you please."
Kalina walks up to Mr. Steele's desk.
"You're awfully quiet this morning. Is everything OK?"
"I'm fine."
"Look, I understand that you and Harper have or had some issues, but hopefully you two can work around them because the last thing I want is Principal Davis calling anyone out in front of the whole school."
"Yes sir." Kalina says as she leaves the classroom.
