5 Years Ago Today

When Pony woke up this morning, he knew what day it was. It was the five year anniversary of Johnny's and Dally's deaths. Pony couldn't believe it. Five years?! That can't be true. It feels like it happened yesterday! He thought.

It took a lot of strength, but Pony got the courage to get out of bed. He knew how the gang was gonna react: all sympathetic toward Pony. Pony didn't mind that, but he just wanted to be alone! When he got to the kitchen, he saw the gang waiting for him.

"Hey Pony! Want some breakfast?" Asked Darry.

He shook his head. "Not hungry," he mumbled.

Eventually, Darry coaxed Pony into eating some pancakes. But it just didn't feel right. Then he heard a sniffle. Pony turned around right away. It's very unlikely for one of the gang members to cry. It almost never happens. He saw no one crying, but he did see Two-Bit standing by the window. Pony walked over.

"Hey Two."

"Hey." Two-Bit was looking up at the sky.

"You okay?" Pony asked.

"Yeah. I just miss them a lot."

"I know me too."

Suddenly, Two-Bit turned to look at him. He looked furious.

"WHY THE HELL DID YOU RUN INTO THAT BURNING CHURCH ANYWAY?!?! THEY WOULD'VE STILL BEEN ALIVE IF YOU DIDN'T RUN INTO THAT CHURCH!"

Pony was taken aback. Then Two-Bit ran out the door. Pony went to go follow him until Soda stopped him.

"Just let him cool off. He'll be okay soon."

The whole gang seemed a bit shaken. Two never broke like that. He always hid it with beer and jokes. This was one of the first times the gang had seen him freak out.

About an hour or so later, Two-Bit came back to the Curtis household. He looked ashamed.

"Pony, I'm sorry for snappin' at you like that. I didn't mean it I swear. I'm just, um, confused and upset I guess."

"It's okay. I've always wondered that too."

"What?"

"What would've happened if I never ran into the church. Would they still be here? Would Johnny be in jail? What would of happened?"

Two-Bit suddenly broke into tears.

"I'm sorry," he cried, "I can't help it! I miss them so much!"

The rest of the day was pretty dreary. It began to rain and it was dark, just like everyone's feelings. At night, Steve left, but Two-Bit spent the night: Darry was afraid of him getting rip-roaring drunk. Pony climbed into bed and turned out his light. Suddenly, he was crying.

"Hey, it's gonna be okay," said Soda, who also had tears on his face. "It'll get better, I promise."

"I miss them so much!" Sobbed Pony.

"I know. I do too. But it should get better, I promise."
