Eli took a long, hard look at himself in the mirror, and sighed. He inspected his eyes, the ones she had loved so much she had written poems about them. The blue had been described as "never ending", and like the ocean, but when he looked, he only found emptiness. After a year without her, the pain was still fresh, but the memories began to fade. The moments that remained fresh were replayed over and over: hot chocolate in warm weather, flour hand prints in all the right places, tucking Emma in, and that purple dress twirling as she danced on their last date. He'd often contemplated over the last year whether it would be easier if he had never met Emma, but whenever he thought about it he always came to the same conclusion. If he hadn't met her, he wouldn't be the person he was today. And for the most part, Eli liked who that was. Nina and Allison had stood by him in those first few months, when it was all he could do not to cry at any reminder. He had moved on from the heavy grief, mostly; he had never looked at another girl in that way in the year since. He was going to culinary school finally, after months of bickering with his father about it. Eli sensed he had only allowed him to go out of pity, but hell, Emma would want him to do it. And he had to admit, it made him happy. His gaze went up to his hair, which the hairdresser had been touching up to trim the last remnants of the dyed blonde hair he had had for the last three years. He almost didn't recognize himself with his dark brown hair, he hadn't had it for so long. He already felt more like himself.
Authors Note:
Okay, I got really bored and nostalgic about the days I was writing this story, and I thought that I might as well continue it just for kicks. We'll see if my writing can live up to the brilliance I came up with as a thirteen year old. Stay tuned for the adventures of Eli Binks, as I try to make him less of a stereotypical straight white male, starting with the 'perfect' blonde hair :)
