Yes, Lord Percy did offer to punish the criminal, but what I was seeing did not seem like any punishment. Although, the murderer’s back was to me, I could clearly make out the Lord’s face. He bore a triumphant smirk. He turned around and shuffled something behind him. The faint jingle of coins filled my ears, and my eyes widened when I saw a dark sack being handed over to the man.

Their voices were soft, but I could just about make out what they were saying. I pressed my ear to the crack between the doors and concentrated.

“…good job…aim is quite remarkable…assassinated the King with ease…” I gasped. That was Lord Percy’s voice!

“…pleasure working…I hope my pay is…”

I strained my ears more to make out every word. I did not like the turn this conversation was taking.

“It is a shame you were not able to get the Prince as well…for that, I have deducted your pay..”

“What!” The man exclaimed. “I did everything you asked me to! That stupid princess got in my way! I could not get a shot at the Prince because for her, and the guards approached, so I had no choice but to run!”

“I told you before; you had no chance of escape. You had to get captured, so why did you not stay a little longer and finish the job?” Lord Percy growled.

“I could not help it! My instincts told me to run!”

“Well then, you can blame your instincts for the cut of your money.”

“No!” The murderer protested. “I will turn you in if you try to double cross me!”

For a moment, the room grew silent. I turned my head and peeked through the doors and saw the Lord grab the criminal by his collar and lift him off the ground. Lord Percy seethed in annoyance at the boldness of his employee.

“Who would believe you?” He snarled between clenched teeth. The Lord pulled the man’s face closer to his until they were only a finger’s length apart.

The small man cowered in the Lord’s grasp, and he began to tremble in fear.

“It would be your—a lowly murderer’s word—against mine; a Lord, the King’s brother. Who would believe you when you tell them that I ordered the death of my own brother and nephew?”

I covered my mouth in disbelief for fear that I would make a sound.

Lord Percy, he…the King…and Prince Auden?

“But because of your failure, my nephew is still alive and well.” The Lord dropped the man onto the floor and turned around running a hand through his hair with a frustrated sigh.

I have to tell someone! The Prince! He is still in danger!

I whirled on my heels and took a step away from the door. My dress fanned out around me and hit the large oaken panel. My face twisted with horror when the door creaked open a bit more.

Lord Percy’s eyes snapped towards the sound and his cold, hard glare met my face. His expression contorted into one of shock, then turned to complete malice. He started to walk towards the door.
