"Have you found Marcus?" I ask Four. After Tommy went to school Four, Tris, Eric, Max, Uriah, Thomas, and myself started to look for Marcus. The dauntless leaders have decided that Marcus is going to be put in jail for the rest of his life.
"No" he says.
"Keep looking" I say. Thomas, Tris, Four, and I are together, and Max, Eric, and Uriah are together.
"Split up" Tris says. Tris and Thomas go into one abnegation house and Four and I go into another. It is silent inside, Four and I walk into a bedroom.
"He isn't here" I say. The bedroom door slams shut, we are trapped inside the room. "I am here sweetheart" I turn around to see Marcus. Four and I pull out our guns.
"I don't want any trouble here" Marcus says.
"We don't want trouble either, put your hands up or there will be" Four says.
"What if I don't?" Marcus asks.
"Then we shoot" four says.
"Not so fast" Marcus says then pulls out a gun and Joey walks in with a gun.
"Hello emerald" Joey says.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
"After what you did to me at the wedding, I wanted revenge. Marcus found me and we started to plan. We made Payton poison you. We said that if she didn't do it then we would kill everyone she cares for." Joey says.
"Why would you do that?" I ask.
"I loved you, I cared for you, but you left me, you forgot about me." Joey says nearly yelling.
"I did not leave you," I yell, "you left me for the erudite, you said you did not know who I am. You never cared for me, you never loved me."
"Yes I did, I loved you Emerald." he yells.
"No you never did" I yell.
"You two stop it" Marcus says.
"Marcus put your hand in the air now" Four says.
"No, I was only doing what is best for you." Marcus says.
"It's one thing to beat me, another to beat my sister, and another to beat my nephew." Four says.
"It is the best for you both." Marcus says.
"What is good about beating children?" Four asks, Marcus doesn't say anything.
"Okay, Marcus and Joey put down your guns" I say.
"You put yours down first" Marcus says.
"Why do we have to lesson to you?" Four asks.
"Because," Joey says, "if you don't put your guns down then Tommy will die."
"What are you talking about?" I ask. Joey holds up is phone, on the screen it is someone holding a knife to Tommy's throat.
"Tommy say good bye to your mommy" Joey says.
"Tommy, it okay everything is going to be okay." I scream.
"Mommy, they're hurting me." Tommy cries.
"Don't worry." I nearly scream.
"Please make them stop, mommy." Tommy says.
"I will, I promise." I say. Then joey puts the phone away.
"You leave Tommy out of this." I yell.
"Put down your gun and he will live." Joey says. I don't do anything, I just stand there.
"If he dies it will be your fault, he died in your place." Joey says. I lower my gun.
"On the ground now." Joey says and it get on my knees, "Four leave now or Tommy and Emerald will die, and take Marcus with you, he is of no use to me anymore." Four handcuffs Marcus and they walk out. Joey walks up to me and picks up my gun, he then takes out his phone.
"Tommy, watch your mommy" Joey says. Joey grabs a fist of my hair and jerks my head back so I look at him.
"You should have taken my offer at the wedding." He says.
"No, I will never love you." I say. He throws me to the other side of the room.
"Mommy" Tommy screams.
"No, honey it is okay. Don't watch the screen." I say. Joey starts to continually hit me in the face with his gun. I can hear Tommy crying, and people banging on the bedroom door.
"Joey open this door." Thomas yells.
"That door will not open until I want it to be opened." Joey says. Then I hear repeating banging on the door, then it stops.
"Scream, I want you to scream." Joey hisses in my ear, I don't scream, he just wants to hurt Thomas. Joey pulls out a knife and puts it to my collarbone.
"This will make you scream" Joey hisses. He stabs me with the knife, I scream, he starts to carve a 'J' into my skin. The banging on the door starts again. I continue to scream as he carves his name on my collarbone.
"Joey I promise I will kill you." Thomas says. Joey smiles and presses deeper, causing me to scream louder. Joey looks like he is enjoying my pain. I look over and see my gun, I grab it and Joey grabs his. We pull the triggers at the same time. His bullet barley misses my head, I did not see ware my bullet hit him but he has fallen to the ground.
"Emerald," Thomas screams, "what happened? Are you okay?"
"I'm okay." I say then walk to the phone, "Tommy I'm coming." I turn off the phone. I open the door then walk to Joey. He has a bullet in the stomach.
"Now I know how your father felt be for he died." Joey says with a smile. Thomas raps his arms around me pulling me away from Joey.
"What are you talking about? My dad is not dead, the doctor said he was fine." I say struggling against Thomas and now Four.
"The night of your wedding," Joey says, "he died. I killed him." Joey continues to smile.
"No you're lying" I scream.
"Ask your brother and your husband." Joey says then takes his last breath. I look over to Thomas and Four.
"We didn't know how to tell you." Four says. I fall to my knees, then I crawl to Joey's body. I start hit it with everything I have. I'm screaming, crying, hitting, kicking, and doing anything that would hurt to him. Thomas and Four pull me away, they surround me in a hug.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask a little mad.
"We didn't know how" Thomas says.
"You didn't know how?" I scream and stand up, "you could have said, 'Emerald, I like what you did to your hair today, oh, and by the way your dad is dead.'"
"Emerald-" Thomas starts.
"Stop, stop right there." I scream then start running. I don't know where I'm going but I keep running.

I stop running when I come to the fence, I knee down in front of it. I want to be free, free of this world, this life, everything, I want to free. I put my face into my knees.
"Please let this be a dream," I scream, "let this be a nightmare."
"Emerald, this isn't a dream, this is real." Thomas says.
"Go away" I scream. He puts his arms around me, I push him off and start to run again. He tackles me to the ground and holds me down.
"Get off of me" I scream.
"Emerald stop, just lesson to me." he says in a calm voice, "I'm sorry, I wish your dad wouldn't have jumped in front of me. I wish I would have died instead of him. I wish I could fix it but I can't. It should have been me not him. He is a selfless person, I am not selfless, smart, kind, truthful, and I'm not brave." He says.
"Thomas, you are all of those things and much more." I say crying. He wipes away one of my tears and I do the same to him.
"I'm sorry" we say at the same time, we smile and kiss.
"Tommy," I say, "let's go save our kid." We jump up and start running to the school. We run inside a class room and Meg is tied up to a chair.
"Tommy, they took him." she says when I pull off the tape over her mouth, "I tried to stop them." She says. Thomas starts to cut the ropes that hold her, I run looking for Tommy.

I run into a class room and Tommy is setting on a chair crying.
"No, mommy, don't come in." he says.
"What?" I ask and walk in.
"Mommy, no" he screams, "turn around" I turn and see the man that was holding the knife to Tommy's throat. The man lunges at me, and starts to hit me, I hit him back. He makes a good punch to the temple of my head, I fall to the ground, he gets on top of me. I hear a gun go off and the man slumps onto me. Thomas pulls the man off me and we grab Tommy hugging him.
"I'm so sorry" I say.
"Sorry to brake up this family moment," Marcus says, "but I have a small amount of time before they find me again and I have some business to take care of." He takes off his belt and goes to hit me, but Thomas sticks his hand out. The belt wraps around his arm and Thomas pulls it out of Marcus's hands.
"You are stupid, Thomas." Marcus says and pulls out a gun.
"You can kill me if you promise to never hurt anyone ever again." Thomas says.
"No, Thomas, stop." I scream.
"Emerald, it's okay, you won't be alone, you have Tommy and our friends." He says.
"No Thomas don't do that." I scream. Marcus holds up his gun.
"I love you Tommy. And I will always love my precious gem stone." Thomas says, I look down and hear gun fire go off. I look up to see Thomas still standing, Four at the door, and Marcus laying on the ground. Thomas and four surround tommy and I, then Tris and Eric come running in and hug us, then everyone else. Marcus is dead, Four killed Marcus, Marcus will never hurt me, Four, my son, or anyone else I love.
