Chapter 23
A nurse rushed into Ella's room, and it wasn't long until she popped he head out and yelled for help. Poor Ella had awaken in the night vomiting up blood. She was getting sicker, weaker, and losing all hope. If the world had been a perfect place to live, this never would have happened. Innocent children would be diagnosed with deathly diseases. Ella wasn't healthy, not even close. She had become the talk of the nurses, everyone was whispering about how sickly Ella Marie Smoke looked.
"My Mommy..." Ella mumbles to the nurse that is applying cold, wet cloths to her forehead. "I want my Mommy." Her voice was so quiet and sad.
The nurse tears up watching the little girl. Her skin is a ghostly white and her lips are dyed red from all the blood. The whole room is hot because of the heat radiating off her skin. Her fever was so high, she was beginning to hallucinate.
Sydney, behind the curtain on the other side, is praying for her friend. Listening to the nurse, she knows Ella is getting worse. She stood up and brought her little plush puppy over and around the curtain. Ella is panting while leaned up on a pillow. "This is Taco, my puppy. He makes me feel better when I'm sick. Here, take him." she whispers to her friend and sets the puppy next to Ella. Sydney gave her cheek a light kiss.
Ella manages a little smile. Sydney was always there for her when her family wasn't. When her Dad was off galavanting somewhere else doing God knows what. While her Mommy slept in her hospital bed a few floors down. And while her brother and sister were fighting with each other at Aunty Kelsee's house.

Adrianna felt a little stronger suddenly. She wanted to awaken from this nightmare and find out that she hadn't missed a thing. Colton would hold her and tell her not to worry, that it was all in her head. Then she would find out that little Ella Bell really wasn't in the hospital with cancer. And Melissa and Mike were still the happy-go-lucky kids that they had always been. That was what she needed to happen.
Adrianna pushed. She pushed herself toward the surface of her body. She shoved with her mind, physically straining to breathe through the procedure. Adrianna pushed, and pushed, and pushed. Almost to the top, she kept urging herself on. The more she worked, the more she wanted it. No, the more she needed it.
***Adrianna's POV***
I woke up gasping for breathe. It was like I had been revived. Like I had gained a second chance at life, a second chance to do all the things that I hadn't done before. Rubbing my cold, icy arms, I realized how hungry I was to be held and told that everything was going to be okay.
"Oh my!" my doctor said as he walked past my door. He gasped loudly and ran in. His eyes were filled with joyous tears and it was all he could do to not cheer. "You're awake Mrs. Smoke!" His voice quivered with enthusiasm.
I managed a small smile, trying to focus. My energy was low and my body craved to be fed. "You can call me Adrianna." I tried to say. It only came out as a hoarse whisper. It was raspy and strangled.
"Don't strain yourself m'am! I'll call your husband! It's great to see you up! It's been nearly three weeks!"
I nodded. Three weeks? That's such a long time! My family needed me and I'd do whatever it took to see them again. Home was only a ten minute drive. They'd be here shortly.
I could barely wait!

"Mommy!" Melissa cried as she bolted to my bedside and planted kisses all over my cheek. Her beautiful hair fell into my face as she enveloped me in a tight hug. I sighed, enjoying the warmth from her. I could smell her shampoo, Loreal Kids.
