Chapter 16
Brayden's strong hands threw me to the ground in the cabin. I was sweating like crazy from the long hike up, and my breathing was increasing to such a speed that it must've caught up to the beat of my heart.
"You hurt me really bad, you know?" he said sadly. I looked up at him and felt the slightest bit of mercy, only because I used to love him. Otherwise, I wouldn't give the boy the time of day. But this was sort of pathetic, like he had nothing better to do then try and catch up to me all the time.
"Brayden... I have a family. A great husband, twin toddlers, and a seven year old girl. Please take me back. Ella needs me." I whimpered. He looked at me and shook his head. His eyes were angry, humiliated, and hurt. I missed the light in them. Oh how he used to glow...
"Right now, you aren't going anywhere."
He shoved me into the bedroom at the side of the house. He boarded up the windows and locked me in. There was no escaping. There were no usable weapons anywhere in the room. Nothing with sharp edges, or anything too heavy. It seemed as if he really thought this through...
"Brayden please! Ella's really sick! I need to get back to her!" I called out the door. Tears were welling up in my eyes just thinking about her. She was sick and I needed to be with her. That's where I belonged!
"Ella will have to wait!" he shrieked. His high pitched tone caught me off guard. Never had he screamed at me like this before. He was so angry!
"I don't know how long she can!" I sobbed. "Cancer isn't exactly something that waits and heals itself!"
The noises stopped from the other side of the door. The cabin was silent. Dead silent. I almost thought he had left. "She has cancer?" he asked finally.
"Yes, yes she does."
***Colton's POV***
There were only a few places Brayden would've taken her. He could've gone to his old house, his parents farmhouse out in the country past Chrissy's, or the cabin.
I drove through the dark of the night. It was cold and I could see my foggy breathe, even with the heater on. I would like to be spending more time with Ella, not traipsing down my ex best friend to rescue my wife.
Why did he come back? The question was haunting me, springing back up into my head after watching my little town disappear in my review mirror.
He wasn't at his old house, that was for sure. I went there and searched for any signs of life there. There wasn't any. If he had gone there, he made quite an effort to cover it up. Too big of an effort for Brayden.
Now I was checking out the farmhouse. It was closest, and I didn't want to be any farther from my kids than necessary. Frantically I searched, calling names into every room, trying desperately to find Adrianna.
"I'm going to kill him. When I'm done with him, he'll be dead. Stupid bastard should leave my family alone." I said to myself. Adrianna wouldn't like it, not at all. But I needed to do it to protect my family.
Nobody messes with the Smoke's.
***Ella's POV***
I was tired and, I hate to admit it, scared. Mommy left hours ago and it was my first night alone in the hospital. I picked up the paper my Mommy wrote phone numbers on and skimmed down until I found Daddy's. Mommy spent all day at the hospital, so I decided to phone Daddy instead.
"Hello." my Dad answered. He sounded panicky and restless, worn out even. Maybe he was mad...
"Hi Daddy! It's Ella!" I chimed. I hoped I didn't wake Daddy by calling his cellphone. I hated to wake him. I shouldn't have called at such a time.
