A few years after Smaug claimed Erebor for himself, the Dwarves of the Iron Hills have killed Smaug's mate and held ransom his unborn hatchlings -- and send an egg to each of the Dwarven clans in Middle-Earth -- in order to lure him away from Erebor so that the Dwarves could kill him and reclaim their beloved mountain again.

However, the scheme fails, when they discover that Smaug went into hibernation -- and several of the dragon eggs end up not surviving. One broke, another was stolen, the third froze, the fourth was destroyed, and the fifth was lost to an opportunistic predator. Only one egg was left -- the one held captive by the Dwarves of the Iron Hills.

A few months later, the egg hatches. The Dwarves immediately chain it and imprison it until they can get Smaug out of Erebor. Fortunately, Smaug eventually dies at the hand of Bard, and the Dwarves are finally able to reclaim Erebor and restore it to its former glory.

With no more need for a captive, the Dwarves decide to enslave it and use the adolescent dragon as a living bellows to help fire their forges and smelters.

Write from the POV of the dragon and/or from one of the Dwarves

Author's Note: Mae govannen, mellyn! Here's the first Hobbit prompt/story idea of the story. I hope you like it. Found this picture on Pinterest and it kinda reminded me of Smaug, and the stone structure reminded me of a Dwarven dwelling. So my mind came up with the idea of Smaug's hatchling being imprisoned by the Dwarves as an attempt to get Smaug out of Erebor -- with no success. So they end up using him as an eternal living bellows to help them forge and smelt things.

This isn't really canon. It's more of a headcanon or a fanon -- a what-if scenario, if you will. As I doubt that the Dwarves would've spent all those years in exile without coming up with schemes to get Smaug out of Erebor. But that's just me. Maybe that's what they did. Who knows?

What do you think?

I'll try to come up with more Hobbit and Silmarillion prompts/story ideas so that it's not all LOTR-heavy. I know more of LOTR, so it's easy for me to write a lot of LOTR prompts/story ideas. But I'll try to keep it balanced.

Again, if you have any story ideas or prompts that you'd like to give up for adoption or to help add to the book, please post a comment below. Your support is highly appreciated. ^_^

Goodbye, my friends. May the stars guide your way and make your journey safe.

Long live the Night!
