Chapter 23

San Francisco

“so what do I owe you for this visit?” tanong ni Den kay Nate ng makita ito sa loob ng kanyang cafē.

“Maqui and Julie justleft and I’m not allowed here anymore?” birong sagot naman Nate.

“so how are you?” dugtong nito.

“I’m good, you?” balik na tanong ni Den.

“I’m going back to the Philippines” natigilan si Den sa sinabi niya and he gave Nate a question look.

“the company will be having it’s golden anniversary and the chairman want me there, his resigning” he explained “the press keep on nagging Maqui, assuming that she’ll be the next CEO and I want to protect her. I can only do that if I’m there”

Alden smiled upon hearing what Nate said, he could see through his eyes that he really cares for Maqui.

“That’s what I came here for, to inform you. . . and to ask you if you wanna come with me” alok nito.

“I- I’m not sure Nate, I guess I wasn’t ready for it”

“You’re planning to have another branch of your café right? So why don’t bring it to the Philippines?” Nate suggested

“and Julie will be please to see you”

Napangiti rin si Alden pero napaisip ito.

“I know that, but it’s a big move for me and I can’t live this café. Who’ll manage this?”

“Carlo, his here when you started this right and he knows everything about the business. . . look Den, I’m not forcing you to come with me but I know what you feels for Juls and if you’ll just stay here the two of you well never happened.”

“I cared for Julie the way you cared for Maqui, Nate. . . but she went through a lot and I wanted to keep it slow, gave her time to heal. She just lost her fiancé and she can’t even remember it” Alden express his point.

“what I want first, is for her to remember and move on from thelove of her life”

Nate nodded and silently laugh.

“thelove of her life hu!” Nate Stated repeating Alden’s words.

Alden could felt that there’s something more in that statement.

“so Maqui didn’t told you about the other guy” Nate said that caught Alden’s full attention.

“other guy?” kunot nuong tanong nito.

“Julie was engaged to Sam at the day of the accident but she’s in love with someone else and everybody knows that. . . even Sam”

“S- She’s in love with someone else?” ulit ni Alden na parang hindi makapaniwala.

“As you know, Julie lost 4yrs of her memory and she thought she spend it here in San Fo healing, but the truth was she’s been here for more than a year. Maqui made up that lies to avoid further questions and complicity on what really happened with her life on that 4yrs and how she lived it”

“why?”

He thought he already knew a lot about Julie’s life before, more than what Julie knows about herself. It turns out that Maqui only told him about the accident and what happened after. He never knew what happened before that, what’s Julie’s life before the accident that caused her to lost 4yrs of her memory.

“In Julie’s condition, she can’t handle all the answers. The doctor said that she suffered a selective amnesia that result her to forgot a certain part of her life that she was traumatized and that’s was 4yrs ago when they discovered about her heart failure. We think it’s good for her that way but she also forgot that she learned to fall in love in between” Nate pause and look Alden in the eye.

“”Maqui said that Julie run away from home when she found out about her illness, she couldn’t stand seeing her dad hurting. Together with Maqui, they live in a small apartment for 2yrs, trying to live her life as normal as she could. She doesn’t want to take a transplant and plan to live until her hearts allows her to but she met a guy . . . her boss, that’s when she start to fall in love. Maqui knew that the guy was also in love with her, she could see it”

“Maqui said that they were so in love with each other. Julie decided to have a heart transplant even she has a slight chance to survive, she wanted to live more for that guy, but things got complicated. They were both kidnapped, the guy takes a bullet for her but he survived. Julie’s condition worsen and they have to fly her here in San Francisco for an artificial transplant, that’s the only way to save her. As you could see, Julie survived but before that she was on coma for a month and all through out that the guy never shows up. When she woke up, she looked for him but he wasn’t there, even in her recovery stage he never came. She waited but nothing happened”

“that’s when Julie saw Sam, he was always there and never left. When Sam proposed Julie said ‘yes’ but we all know that she only love him as a bestfriend and Sam knew that too”

Alden was silent all through out, it a lot for him to take in and Nate gaves him time to absorb everything.

“w- what happened to him? To the guy?” Alden breaks his silence.

“why he didn’t show up?”

“Maqui said that maybe he just gave up on Julie, that maybe he didn’t have a lot of faith on her or maybe he got tried on fighting for her, for them and just moved on” Nate answer.

“we don’t really know but what I know is, Julie was back and there’s a huge possibilities that they’ll meet again. Julie may not remember him but as what they say ‘the mind may forget but the heart never forget’”
