Chapter Thirteen: Red Carpet
Today was one of the best days of my life and I was happy that I would be able to spend it with a friend. Ong went with me to all of my appointments as I got ready, not once complaining about being bored or anything similar.
"I don't understand why you put in all of this work for a couple of hours," Ong said sitting on the bed watching me do my makeup.
"Think about all the time you spend when you're about to go on a comeback stage. Now times that by four because I have a lot longer hair" I said. It wasn't exactly fair on how much longer females spent getting ready, but at the same time, it made sense.
"So shouldn't you be getting ready," I asked.
The boy who was lying on the bed lazily stood up and made his way to the closet where his suit was hung up. My dress was pretty much my idea of a perfect prom dress, and as someone who never went to prom, this was the one time I would be able to wear a prom dress. A light pink color with lace on top it was a dress that I would remember for a long time.
"Um, do you think you can help me," I said opening the door finding Ong working on his tie.
My dress had a zipper on the back and I was always horrible at zipping clothes if I couldn't see them. There was a noticeable pink tint on Ong's cheeks as he stood making his way over zipping up the dress.
"Thanks," I said giving him a smile.
"Do you think you could help me, it's sort of sad that I can't do this myself?" he said holding the two ends of his tie.
"Maybe, I'm going to need directions," I said pulling out my phone.
That was how we spent the next twenty minutes my hands near his neck doing my best in tying his tie for him. Eventually, we figured it out and were ready to head to the premier.
"So what am I about to see," Ong asked when we were safe inside the town car.
"It's going to be weird, very weird. But at the same time, it was fun to film so just don't judge me too much" I told him.
"I won't, I will barely know what is going on," he said.
He was correct after all the movie was in English and he barely understood it so he wasn't going to understand what was going to be said. "Thank you for coming with me," I said giving him a smile and holding out my hand out to him.
"Anytime" he responded.
I could hear the cheering from outside the car as we pulled up to the carpet. The movie sort of gained a cult following so there were plenty of supporters along with those who were speaking out against it. Ong and I shared one last secret smile before the car door was opened and he stepped out.
Nobody knew who he was so there was no reaction from the crowd as he held out his hand for me to take. As I stepped out there were some small sounds of recognition some people clapping or cheering.
There were whispers from a lot of people some even pointing to the man that was on my arm. We made our way through the carpet keeping to ourselves posing for pictures from those who asked.
"Hana, can we speak to you," a woman asked from the reporter area. I nodded and made my way over to her taking Ong's hand in my own so that he would follow me.
"Can you tell me what it was like to be a foreigner and working in a Hollywood film?" she asked holding a mic out for me to talk.
"It was a little difficult just to get into the business. I'm really grateful for the opportunity and I've made friends that I hope last" I explained.
"Were there any cultural references that your culture might not accept fully?" she asked. It wasn't a secret that South Korea was a bit more of a conservative country but her question still threw me off a bit.
"I grew up in Chicago, so I grew up surrounded by a lot of this," I told her with a fake smile. It annoyed me when people thought I wasn't from America when my accent clearly said I was.
She nodded and asked a couple more questions about the film before turning to the man on my arm. "And who are you," she asked. Ong turned to me his eyes wide having no idea what he was being asked.
I giggled drawing the attention back to me. "Sorry he's from South Korea, doesn't speak English," I explained. "His name is Ong Seung-woo, a member of Wanna One," I said knowing if they were interested enough they would look it up.
"If you don't mind me asking, are you two a couple," she asked
"Were actually on a reality show about idols who get married, therefore he is my date?" I said with a smile on my face.
I loved how shocked American people get at the seemingly random things that Koreans find entertaining. The interview went into a little bit of my time in Korea before I ended it heading into the theater with everybody else. Victoria caught up with me quickly pulling me into a seat next to her and a guy who I assume was her date.
"Ready to see your face on a big screen," Victoria asked.
I grew already knowing I wasn't going to be too fond of it, and it was even worse because I was what started the whole movie. Sure enough, when the theater went dark my face appeared on the screen and my only screen started to play.
Ong grabbed my hand tighter when I first came on screen causing me to chuckle slightly at his excitement.
Throughout the movie, I could tell he was very surprised and slightly upset about what he was seeing on the screen. It was actually more entertaining to watch his reaction than what was actually going on in the movie.
Victoria did an amazing job and I was actually surprised at how well she could sing never actually hearing her before. I thought she was just an actress that would have started some talk about the movie.
"You did an amazing job," Ong said as we made our way from the theater.
Before I could thank him Victoria had pulled me into a hug telling me how well I did. "I didn't know you had a set of pipes on you like that" she started. "Plus you looked pretty good too" she finished.
I laughed knowing she was referring to the outfit that I wore while I was on screen. "Please you were in your underwear for half the movie," I said.
We laughed before she said, "Are you coming to the after party."
"I can't, I'm having special visitors tomorrow" I whispered making sure that Ong couldn't hear me. My parents were coming into town tonight and we would be meeting up with them tomorrow so that they could meet Ong.
"Alright call me before you go back over," she said giving me a hug.
"I will see you in the future," I said before turning and heading off with Ong.
We were back in the car again, my head resting on One's shoulder thinking about my time in America. "So was it everything you hoped for," I asked.
"Yes, but I excited to be heading home," he said.
In just three days we would be heading back to Korea where we would finally be getting married. Which meant our time together was growing smaller by the hour, but I didn't want to think about what I would be without him. We had grown so close I was worried about going back to not having anybody.
"Well we have two days left, I have something planned each of those days so I hope you're prepared," I said.
He nodded with a small sparkle in his eyes agreeing to what I was saying. I was right about how cool it would be to show someone America who had never been before.
