The streets cleared out in a hurry, students scrambling and scurrying off in each and every direction, not wanting to stick around and find out who was firing a gun.
Through the rain and general hullabaloo, Ezra could make out Archie Andrews doubled over on the road, struggling to pick himself up.
It was self inflicted, it didn't take a rocket scientist to work out what would happen to him after threatening a gang but it didn't stop her feeling horribly for the redhead.
Worried, the brunette ran towards her childhood friend, only to be beaten there by Reggie Mantle.
Reggie and Ezras relationship was one very typical of the Northside Bulldog and Southside Serpent. They were destined to hate each other for as long as they were at opposite ends of each other's worlds.
There was a point they'd gotten along, so much so that Reggie was Ezras date to her first ever school dance, but as they got older an obvious rift was wedged in between them.
Not that they were the best of friends to begin with.
"Are you okay?" The Jones girls question was directed at Archie, obviously, as she grew closer to the pair.
"Yeah—"
"Get lost, Jones." Reggie snapped, spinning around to face her "You're the whole reason this even happened, it was your lunatic boyfriend that came here screaming and shouting about Archie allegedly threatening his girlfriend."
She ignored the boy, offering Archie a hand up. Sweet Pea was not her boyfriend, not anymore anyway, but it wasn't unusual for him to refer to Ezra as his girlfriend whenever he felt she was being disrespected or threatened.
Even though she was more than capable of defending herself.
"I said get lost, we don't need your help." Reggie repeated, shoving her arm away and leaned over to help Archie up himself.
Ignore, ignore, ignore. Ezra repeated the word in her head, biting her tongue as to not worsen the situation. So again, she moved to help her friend again.
"Bro!" Again Reggie shoved her away, underestimating the height difference as the back of his hand came in contact with her face "How many times— oh my God."
He'd cut himself off once he'd seen the bright red splotch spreading across the girls face, Archie now managing to somehow summon the strength to jump to his feet.
Ezra shook her head, hand pressed against her cheek and blinking back the stinging tears "It's okay, it was an accident."
"Jones! What the fuck are you hanging out with these tools for?" Frankies voice echoed throughout the silent street, a soft giggle following as he was clearly proud of his insult.
Before he could come much closer Ezra turned and approached him instead, linking her arm through his and leading him off "Just making sure he was still alive, come on let's go home."
They walked the whole way back to Frankies trailer arm in arm, Ezra beyond happy that it was so dark the red mark on her cheek wasn't visible. There wasn't a doubt in her mind that it'd be a bruise the next day, but by then she'd be able to think up of a lie.
