Clarke's point of view

"Heda, Wanheda and your brother ask your attention."
Octavia looked up from the map on the table in the middle of the room to the woman that had guided Bellamy and I here, and then to me. Seeing the look in my eyes, she turned to the man on the other side of the table that she had previously been discussing something with and stated, "If you believe the western ridge will yield, I'll trust your judgement. Assemble a party and leave as soon as you can; there are plenty of hungry mouths in this camp." The man nodded, and Octavia's voice rose to address the others in the room. "Everyone out!"
Once everyone except for the guard at the door had filed out of the room, Octavia turned and perched atop her new makeshift throne, leisurely draping her arms out on the armrests before acknowledging us. "What is it?"
I spoke, my tone verging on accusatory, "You made Madi your second."
"I did. She saved my life, not to mention the lives of the others in my squad when we came back to the ground. She's a fast learner and an excellent fighter. I'm proud to have her as my second," Octavia responded nonchalantly.
I narrowed my gaze, clarifying, "You made her your second, and you didn't tell me."
She blinked. "You were recovering in Medical; I didn't want to disturb you. Is this seriously what you demanded my attention for?"
I scoffed, walking around the table to stand in front of her. "Of course it was. Octavia, if you were to fall, Madi is most likely to become the next Commander. You knew this, and you made her your second without telling me first."
"Clarke--" Octavia began, but I cut her off.
"Not only that, but you had the nerve to make Madi your second without telling her what would happen if you die! Do you think she's ready to handle that responsibility--"
"Enough!" Octavia snapped, standing up.
I felt Bellamy's large hand gently grip my shoulder. I continued to glare at Octavia as he made me back away from her, his voice warningly low, "Calm down, Clarke."
Octavia sighed, taking a moment to calm herself and continuing evenly, "I'm only Commander because I proved myself in the conclave. A lot in the clan are still wary of me because my blood is red. A part of the reason why I chose Madi as my second was because she is a nightblood, so I know that, if I die, Wonkru will continue to thrive under the rule of someone that they won't hesitate to follow."
I stiffened, opening my mouth to retort, but Bellamy beat me to it. "Tell Madi. Let her decide if she still wants to be your second, and if she says no, choose someone else who's willing. If she agrees, then nothing has to change."
My determination crumbled. I knew that leaving this up to Madi was the right thing to do, but I couldn't bear the thought of her shouldering the burdens of leading a clan while she was so young.
After a considerate pause, Octavia gave in. "Fine. Clarke, do you agree?"
I squeezed my eyes shut. My heart screamed no, but my head told me to trust that Madi would make the right decision.
My head was right.
I opened my eyes, sighing. "Do it. If she says yes, then I won't interfere."
I heard Bellamy release a relieved breath beside me.
"Good. The next time we train, I'll tell her." Octavia narrowed her gaze at me as she continued. "I hope she chooses wisely."
I swallowed. "Me too."
