BOOM
I squirm.
BOOM
BOOM!
I jerk awake panting. Thunderstorms. I've always been terrified of them. I look out the window just as a bolt of lightning strikes in the field. Through the light I noticed something running around. I squint my eyes to adjust to the darkness and I figure out that it's a horse. I jump up out of Conners arms and grab a jacket from the closet in my room.
"Linds, come back." Conner mumbles, half asleep.
"Conner help me! The horses are loose!" I said sliding on some flip flops. He jumped up stumbling a little bit and slid on his shoes. I ran out the bedroom door and down stairs to the back door. I realize which horse it is, he's always been afraid of thunderstorms just like me.
"Bambi!!" I screamed. I got his attention but he was still running around frantically. Conner ran passed me and went after Bambi, who was just running, more like pacing, back and forth. I ran towards the barn and grabbed a lead rope that I could connect to his halter. More thunder and lightning come.
"Conner get back." I warn calmly. I walk slowly towards Bambi and he's still flipping out.
"Bambi calm down." I whisper. He probably couldn't hear me but he stops running. I'm tellin ya, me and this horse have been through alot. It's kinda like we're connected sometimes. I walk calmly and hook the rope onto his halter. "Thata boy." I say rubbing his forehead. We get to the barn and not only did Bambi kick open the door and break the hinges off, he kicked holes through the stall walls. It's a good thing we have an extra stall. I walk him in the stall and fill the water bucket and set a small bale of hay in there. He was still bugging out a bit..
"Calm down boy. It's okay." I grab the radio we had always had in the barn and turn on some music. Music calms the soul. Well in my case it does. In Bambi's too. I took the lead rope off his halter and set it on the hook on the stall door on the outside.
"Um. Conner, would you mind checking on the other animals? They're probably fine but just in case." he nodded and walked down the hall of the barn. I grabbed Bambi's halter and rubbed his neck. I missed this. I did this every time there was a storm. Nobody else. It was me. I was like their protector I guess. Stupid as it may sound I bounded with the animals. When I get enough money I'm going to buy a house that can put all of them there. I've got to much on my plate now though. Otherwise I'd get a job and save all of the money towards a house.
"Everything's okay." Conner said, popping into view again. "That was really something Lindsey. I mean you called him down like that." he said snapping his fingers.
"It was nothing trust me." I mumbled. "You wanna go back to bed?"
He nodded. I get to the door and more thunder strikes. Honestly I can deal with the pouring rain and lightning. The lightning actually looks cool, but the thunder scares me. I jerk back and Conner wraps a hand around mine. "Come on, I got you." I hate this. He takes a step out and starts walking but I start running. The less time outside in the thunder, the more happy I'll be. I have to let go of his hand though because I just run, and he's behind me taking his time. I get to through the door and set my hands onto my knees, bending over.
"Outta breath?" Conner says walking in with a smirk plastered on his face.
"Shut. Up." I breathe out. He laughs and opens up the fridge. He grabs out a bottle of water and hands it to me. I chug half of it down my throat and stand back up straight. I mumble a thank you and head back to my room. I flip off my shoes and let my jacket slide off to the ground. I climb back into the bed and Conner follows. We laid there staring at each other. We were looking into each others eyes.
