III
"The friend you remind me of?" Zenan tried to explain, but I wasn't listening. There was another human. Probably got stuck here like me. "...Blake."
"Wait, did you just say Blake?" I froze, head snapping towards him. They both looked at me in confusion.
"Yeah, I said the other humans name is Blake." Zenan said, the statement sounding more like a question.
"Does he have a last name?" I asked, my heart beating loudly in my ears. It couldn't be him, could it?
"Yeah... It's Sawyer." Savanah filled in, both of them still confused. I stopped breathing for a second, shocked.
"Madlynn, are you okay?" Zenan rushed to my side as I began breathing again. I was completely and utterly shocked. Was this a dream?
Zenan helped lower me to the ground to sit, my mind racing with so many different thoughts I couldn't process.
"Madlynn?" Savanah knelt down to my eye level, making eye contact. "What happened? Is something wrong?"
"Where is he?" I asked quickly, head shooting up to Zenan, hopeful.
"He joined Elclarth's defenses a few months ago. We aren't sure when he'll be finished with their training so he can come visit."
"Is there any way to go see him? I need to meet him." I told them, urgency in my voice.
"Not until he can have a visit, but we should get a notice before he arrives." Savanah explained. I could tell they were both confused still.
"There has to be a way to see him." I rushed, standing up and beginning to pace back and forth. "I need to see him."
"There is no way; even if we went into the city, they can't let him see anybody until he has finished his training." Zenan said, sounding upset.
"I need to know how and why he was sent here." I sighed in defeat. I needed to know if it was really him or not.
"Why don't we get you cleaned up?" Savanah suggested, helping me up off of the ground. Zenan looked like he wanted to protest, but nodded, taking Ganter away.
Savanah led me towards a small hut, and into a wash room. She pored a pitcher of water into the basin, and began stepping away before noticing the corset.
"Would you like some help taking that off?" She asked, gesturing to the wretched thing.
"If you don't mind." I said shyly, embarrassed for asking for help.
"Not at all." She smiled listening the ropes enough to help me shimmie out of it. I could feel the weight being lifted off of my back as my undershirt rode up, exposing my scarred skin.
"Oh my." Savanah exclaimed, tossing the corset to the side and raising the back of my shirt to examine my wounds. "You poor child."
"I'm sorry." I said, ashamed.
"There is nothing to be sorry about." She exclaimed, rushing out of the room. I could hear glass clanging, and a quiet rustling sound before she came back in, holding fresh clothes and a jar of a glowing golden liquid.
"This will soothe the pain, and will help with the scarring." She explained, applying the cold liquid to my burning back; pain subsiding almost instantly. Then she handed me the clothes. "This should be loose on your back. It's been sitting here since Blake arrived, but its the only thing I have that will fit you."
"This will do fine." I smiled. "Thank you."
"When you are done, I can help you with your hair?" She suggested with a smile as she left the room.
I gently shrugged off the clothes I was wearing, and pulled in the new clothes that almost looked familiar. It looked similar to what Blake was wearing before he left, but it has been five years. My memory must be messing with me.
"I'm done." I said, and Savanah came back in. I flipped my hair upside down so we could wash it more effectively, and lowered my head into the washbasin.
It was a painful journey, but eventually my hair was back to normal and Savanah began examining my head.
"There's a small gash." She explained, leaving the room to grab another glowing lotion, this time in the shade of a dark navy. She applied it with little pain, and the bump was almost completely gone in an instant.
"How's everything looking?" Zenan came in, after we finished.
"She's as good as new." Savanah laughed. "How is the Darkling?"
"He's still rather nervous, but I got him to calm down enough to rest for a while. I assume he was a Nightling Darkling and was abused." Zenan sighed.
"A Nightling? He can't stay." Savanah exclaimed, worriedly.
"What's a Nightling?" I asked.
"Nightlings are a feared, highly dangerous, group of outlaws who have been trying to take over the government for years. If they find a missing Darkling from their troops, they will do anything to get them back from the people that took it. If the beast is really from them, we are in danger."
"What will happen to Ganter then?" I asked worried for the friendly beast.
"I don't know." Savanah said truthfully.
"Maybe we can hide him somewhere until we get him safe. There has to be something we can do." I said, mind trying to find a solution.
"It's too dangerous." Zenan sighed before pulling a small scroll. "And anyways, we will have a visitor coming."
Savanah quickly read the scroll before smiling. "Blake is coming."
