My eyes shot open, and I bolted upright. My head was pounding as I looked around. My surroundings were odd, and I was sitting in a small forest clearing. My vision cleared, and I began noticing subtle differences in my surroundings. Two orbs of light were suspended in the sky, which was almost an olive tone. The grass I was sitting on was soft and tall, and like the rest of the plants in sight, had an almost lilac hue to them.

I could feel my breathing quicken as my brain took in all of this new information. Where was I? Why am I not home?

The memories from before came flooding back in an instant. I was leaving. Running away. The note! I quickly got up, searching the area. My heart dropped after a few minutes of searching, it was no where to be seen. The world began spinning, causing me to drop to my knees. Something jabbed me in the side, and I dropped my hands from the sides of my head. My sword and sheath were securely tied to my waist, and I adjusted them so they weren't stabbing my side.

"Who are you?" A small voice asked. I could see the tip of a sword pointed at me, so I quickly drew mine. Our eyes met, and I nearly fell backwards, his sword clanging as it hit the ground. His hair and eyes were jet black, and though he looked around my age, he was several inches taller than I was.

I quickly jumped to my feet, pointing my own sword at him, the shock slowly fading away. "What are you?"

"I'm just a parenthian!" He gulped, raising his hands up, eyeing his sword. In a flash, he rolled behind me, grabbing his sword in the process, before putting the blade in front of my neck. "What are you?"

"Human." I choked out, the sharp blade pressing against my neck. I kicked his leg, causing him to loose his balance, his sword swinging through the air.

I gasped as I felt the blade hit my cheek, the cut began burning immediately, but I took the moment of shock to jump away from him. I could feel blood dripping down my chin, and raised my sword back at him as we began pacing around in circles.

"Boys! What are you doing? Put your swords away." A women came out of the shadows, holding a basket of ferns, and stepping between us. We both froze, and the boy immediately put his sword away. I just held my sword out, keeping it between me and the strangers.

"Don't come near me." I stuttered, waving my sword between them. The woman just chuckled at me before turning to the boy.

"Zenan, what happened?" The woman scolded him. "Did you do that to the poor boy?"

"I.. I," He stuttered, then slowly nodded, putting his head down. Who was this woman?

"I will deal with you in a moment." She pointed a finger at the boy, Zenan, then turned to me.

"Please.. Leave me alone!" My voice cracked as I took a few steps back, backing me into a tree. She stepped closer and I raised my sword. She just shook her head, waving her hand, and my sword flew out of my hands, landing a few feet away.

My eyes widened, and I froze in shock as she walked up to me. She grabbed my face, wiping away the blood and examining the cut on my face. "Let's go get you cleaned up. What's your name young man?"

"Blake." I stuttered as she grabbed my arm, handing my sword back to me
