II
The beast flinched again as the man emerged from the shadows. My eyes widened, breath catching. He looked human for the most part; black spiked hair, fine features, leather boots, a dark black cloak enveloping his strong frame, white shirt underneath, though he had strange blue-colored cloth trousers.
What got me wasn't his odd style of clothing though, it was his eyes; they were pitch black, darker than his hair, and you could only see white at the corners if he was looking the other way. I could see a sword hanging from his waist, making me uneasy.
"I'm not human." He stated again standing calmly a few feet in front of me. The panic quickly came back after the shock and my breathing became labored again. He tilted his head to the side a bit, obviously confused by my sudden outburst.
"I can tell." I whispered, pretty sure he couldn't hear me, but his chuckle gave way that he did. My mind racing with different thoughts, each more terrifying than the next.
"My name is Zenan, Zenan Kayne." He told me, both breaking the silence and distracting me from my fears. "Do you have a name?"
"Madlynn." I stated, focusing back on his strange eyes, yet again trying to control my breathing.
"Lovely name." He gave me a grin, showing me a white set of what looked like human teeth. "And your friend? Sha kelan ganter?"
"Huh?" I stared at him. He had spoken a different language. He had said he wasn't human but, it still took me by surprise.
"The grey beast." He translated. "Sorry, sometimes I get carried away. This Darkling is magnificent though. Beautiful creature, eh?"
"Darkling?" Was that in the other language too? He was distracting me well, but a corner of my mind still was running through different situations.
"That's the species of the beast." He explained, pulling my attention back in. "He is a Forest Darkling. What did you name him?"
"I haven't yet. What did you call him?"
"Grey beast?"
"In your language."
"Kelan ganter." He supplied. "But that's not my language. Most of us in Eclarth speak English or Parenthian, but what i was speeking was merged in Clav."
"I kind of like Ganter for him." I stated after a moment. The beast snorted in agreement. "I guess it's settled then."
He gave me a small smile before frowning, staring at me. "Did you hit your head? You're bleeding."
"I don't remember."
"I have a friend who can check it out." He stated slowly and warily. "Would you be okay visiting her?"
"I guess." I stated still not sure if I trusted him.
"If you're not comfortable walking with me I can help you get on the beast's back and you can ride him while I walk?" He suggested, sensing my uneasiness.
"I'm perfectly capable of walking myself." I stated, positioning my body in a more upright position. I could feel my ribs aching in protest to the quick movement, but the pain was buried under the adrenaline surging through my veins.
"I said no such thing." Zenan told me giving me a small challenging grin. I knew we just met but he infuriates me much more than a stranger should. "Now, if you think you can keep up, lets get a move on."
"If I knew of the place we were going I would have left already." I stated already bored with his challenge. I continued to eye his sword though, still not trusting him even with his likeable aura.
