Scout's POV
The next morning Jake led us to open the trunk of the van.
"Get in." He said.
Pushing off with our hindlegs we jump in, more like scrambled in for me. My sister grabbed me by the scruff and pulled me inside.
Then we heard human voices.
"Hide behind that blanket." Jake directed us.
There was a big blue blanket to our left and we went behind it.
A man came over and gave Jake a scratch to his ears and gave him a treat from the tin in arms. Then he jumped into his owner's arms. Surprising him. Having him to drop the tin on his poor foot. Spilling its contents.
From our hiding spot, we watched Jake as he jumped down and took two of the treats as his owner wailed in pain and hopped back inside."Why did you do that?" I asked him.
Jake answered by showing us the treats.
"It is a long journey and most of the roads we will be going on are very bumpy and might make you sick." He explained as he gave one treat to us.
I took a bite and devoured the rest of it.
"Easy tiger, you don't want a hiccup to do you?" Jake warned him. I shook my head. "But it is delicious!" Jake chuckled. "That's treats for you, they are always delicious. " Then the man from before came over with a scowl and slammed the door shut.
Then the engine roared to the life they started off on their long journey to the Farmlands.Nutmeg's POV
I spent the time resting as Scout took a nap. Jake was busy playing with a toy one of his owners gave him. It was a yellow bundle of yarn. Eventually, he got himself tangled.
"Need help, Jake?" I whispered.
"No, no I'm fine I'll figure it out." He replied hastily. I crawled back into my hiding spot behind the blue blanket.
Eventually, the skinny grey tabby managed to detangle himself.
Once he did that he walked over close to us and lay down.
"So why are you going to the farmlands? You are obviously an alley cat, why go there?"
"Well, I'm scouting for a new home for us to live, better prey and far away from a cat named Frost. He had ruined my family so many times I just thought my family and friends would be safer there. " I explained to him in a whisper.
Jake nodded in understanding.
"Yes, the farmlands has a lot of prey and space if I may add. Yet, I don't know this cat you speak of but I do know for a fact that even though you may be far from him, that does not eliminate the possibility of danger. The farmland is very close to wildlife. There will be animals that are natural predators there and you might have to fight them, some of them like foxes, badgers and wolves they can kill a cat." He warned."I see," I said.
"So you are never safe, always be on guard Nutmeg. You never know what you may encounter."I took a nap and woke up to see a beautiful sunset between the sparse treeline. There was a beautiful blend of pink and orange painted across the blue canvas sky.
I looked through the window to see a massive bird in the distance.
"What is that?" I asked Jake.
"That is an eagle, shows that we are now we are climbing up the mountain now.
I turned my head to see the mountain.
Something I never heard of or seen before. Jake told me it was the massive rocky hill we were driving on.
I felt the car tilt as we climbed up.
" Wow! " I say breathless as I notice the scenery down below grew smaller and smaller.
"Thats nothing , wait until we are at the top.
"At the top of what?" I heard a sleepy voice. I turned to see Scout stirring beside me he sat up once he looked outside.
"Where are we?"
"We are in the mountains kid." Jake replied.
Scout who never heard of a mountain stared out confused. "Oh, are we in the farmlands?" He asked.
"We are close! Just over this mountain and we will be there." Jake answered.
As the green scenery of the trees whip by we came to the peak as the car slowed to a stop. Through the rear window we saw the breath taking view of the valley down beneath the cliff face.
"Wow." Was all I could say.
I jumped out from behind the blue blanket and came to rear window to get a better look. I could see down below in the valley the big city I grew up in. Now on the mountain I could see how small it really is compare to the vast beauty of the outside world.
"All my life...." I started. "I always thought the city was a big place and there was no end to it.
Now I realize that there is a whole world I never knew. "
"Yeah." Scout agreed. The dark tabby walked over and stood on his hind paws to get a better view. Then suddenly the man from erlier came to the window, startling us.
Scout fell onto his back stunned.
Surprised the man opened the trunk door.
He opened his mouth and called for his wife. The lady face when she saw us was equally shocking as his.
The man reached out for Scout made a run to hide behind me but the man grabbed him by the scruff. I jumped to my feet, my tail whipping, I slid out my claws. Jake noticed me and spoke.
"What ever you do, don't attack them." I gave a sharp look.
"Your owner has my brother by the neck." I growled, I looked up at Scout who now was wiggling like a worm, twisting around I could tell he was growing nervous and anxious to get back to me. He was never much of a people person. He was always nervous around people.
"Let me go!" He cried. Then Scout, out of nervousnes wet the poor man shirt. In surprise and disgust he dropped Scout and ran away. In horror I leaped into the air and caught Scout and put him down safely.
The lady then started to shoo us away then the engine started and I realize they were abandoning us.
"Wait! Jake how do get to the farmlands?" I called out to him.
The grey tabby shouted his relply just as the lady was about to shut the rear door.
"Go down to the other side of the mountain, watch out for-" Was all he could say before he was cut off.Scout and I sat as we watched the car drive away with the last bit of information we needed.
"What are we going to do now, Nut?" My baby brother asked me.I sighed, pulling him closer with my thick tail.
"I don't know yet , but we will figure it out." I reasure him.
Hopefully.,...............................................................
