1.4 Your Loss

I hold on to Jennifer's legs. If I drop her, she dies, we die. I look at Jennifers face as we run. Her eyes are closing. What is going on in this world? Is this happening everywhere? I feel her ankle slipping out of my hand but I manage to hold onto her jeans. I look behind me and see the rotten stumble behind me. Janice shouts at us, "We need to find high ground, somewhere they can't get to us!" I look around trying to find some place high and somewhere we can get without having to leave Jennifer. But instead I see a van driving, we all se it and we all start screaming, the car stops and two nurses get out and one of them starts shooting at the dead, while the other opens the back doors and shouts "Get in!" We run as fast as we can, I look behind me and see some of the rotten fall to the ground. When we get to the car we lay Jennifer inside and then climb into the van ourselves. The nurses get in too and start driving. The nurse who shot at the rotten climbs to the back, "What happened to her?" I look at Jennifer "She got bit." The nurse's concerned face disappears and turns into an emotionless face. She points the gun and shoots. My head turns to Jennifer, the nurse shot her in the head. My body freezes. I look back at the nurse and see how Janice attacks her. The nurse falls over and bumps into the other nurse behind the wheel. The car turns and we crash into something and the next thing I know I open my eyes and see the the sky. I look around me and realize the van is on it's side. I see the nurse with the gun, she has a piece of glass in her neck. I think she's dead. The nurse who was driving is gone. Janice is gone too, but Anna is laying next to me, she seems fine. I shake her a bit but she doesn't wake up. I slap her face and she shoots straight up. She's panicking and I hold her shoulders and try to calm her, "We're okay, we're fine." As she calms down a bit I slowely let go of her shoulders, "We're alive." She looks around, "But they aren't!" She says as she points at the nurse and Jennifer. "I know, but there's nothing we can do about that." Just when we're aboit to leave the van we hear a groan. I turn around and see the nurse with the glass in her neck trying to get up, but she's not the nurse from before, her eyes are dull like the rotten and she moves weird. I don't hesitate and look around for a weapon. I see the gun not far from the nurse, I reach for the gun. The nurse is up now and starts moving closer while groaning. I grab the gun and point at the nurse. She opens her mouth and I pull the trigger without hesitation. I hear the deafening sound of the gunshot and the nurse falls to the ground. I look around one last time. I see the hammer and a knife laying next to the nurse. I hand Anna the knife and keep the gun and hammer for myself. Anna and I then leave the van. As I get up I look around for Janice and the other nurse. They are no-where to be seen, just a lot of the rotten start to get closer. Anna turns around, "We should probably get going." I nod and we start jogging away from the van. On the way we stab and slash some of the rotten. We aim for the head, because that seems to be how you kill them. I hope they're not alive people, I figured they can't be, because a normal person would die when you shoot them in the heart. We walk next to a road when we spot a car driving towards us. We wave our arms and the car slows down and a man steps out of the car. He runs towards us, he seems worried. As he stands infront of us he asks, "Are you two okay? What happened to you? Just get in the car and tell me on the way." We get in his car, we both get in the back seat, because we've seen what an accident can do. The man asks us about if we were at school when it started, we answer his question and the other questions he asked us. "But sir? Where are we going?" He looks at us via his mirror, "Where do you want to go?" I turn to Anna, "I think I would like to go to my house first" Anna nods "After we went to his house, could we go to mine?" The man nods, "Yes of course, where do you live?" We answer and the man turns the car around. As we drive, I realize the dogs must've been alone the whole time. My heart raises, if they're dead... After a little while we get there and I run to the door, I try to open the door, but then I realize it's locked and I left my key in my bag at school. I run to the front door and smash the window of the door. I turn the key and the door opens. I run inside and get greeted by two happy dogs. I can't help but laugh. I'm happy they're alive, I can't imagine what i would've done if they were dead. I walk upstairs and grab my bow and arrows. I do archery, remember? Twelve arrows. I walk downstairs and enter the basement, grab a backpack, the biggest I can find and fill it with canned stuff and bottles of water and other drinks. I then grab a belt. I run back upstairs to grab one of my old toy swords and trow the sword on the ground and keep the holster, to hold a real weapon, I put my hammer in the holster, sort of real. I then run downstairs again, to my dad's workplace, where he fixes stuff, and I grab my arrow kit, so i can make my own arrows. I then return to the car. I open the trunk, Mino and Sokje jump in and I close the trunk again. As I enter the car I say "Sorry, I kind of forgot you guys were waiting. I then open my backpack, "Sir? Do you maybe know how the safety pin of a fun works?" The man laughs, "Where on earth did you find a gun?" I stare at one of the cans, "A dead nurse." The man stops his car and turns around and holds up his hand. I hand him the gun and he turns the gun on the other side and clicks a button. I nod, "Thank you, sir." The man smiles, "Call me John." He then looks at Anna and winks, in a friendly way. Anna kindly smiles. He then turns around again and starts driving again, driving to Anna's house.
