Ms Kousaki had to return to work, so Tokoyami promised her that he would watch over Kitsune.

The lady reluctantly agreed.

Tokoyami was watching the news on the TV in the hospital room.

"Toko-chan?"

Tokoyami turned to her as soon as he heard the feeble voice.

Kitsune's yellow eyes were foggy, barely awake. They settled on him, and a little smile appeared on her pale lips.

He gently grabbed her hand again and she gave his a little squeeze.

She looked out the window at the daylight sun.

"You were here all night?"

"I wasn't planning on leaving you alone", he stated plainly. He propped his chin in his hand and watched her sit up.
"Do you feel better?"

"Not depressed? No. On the verge of a breakdown again? No, so that's a plus", she chuckled darkly.

"Oho, what's with the dark humor?", Tokoyami said.

Kitsune rolled her eyes.
"You're not the only one allowed to be dark."

A nurse popped her head into the door.
"Miss Kousaki, we're getting your medication ready and you'll be discharged in an hour."

"An hour?", Kitsune asked, "Already?"

"Yes ma'am, you should be fine healing at home."

"That's good", Tokoyami said, "You can rest in bed with a good cup of tea and a book."

"Please stay with me, Toko-chan", she pleaded, "I don't want to be left alone again."

Tokoyami's gaze softened at her.
"Of course not. I'll be with you until you say otherwise."

She smiled and held a hand against his face.
"Why are you so nice to me?"

"Because I care about you, Kousachan."

She laughed at the nickname and said it was cute.

But it was not as cute as she was to him.

Kitsune walked out of the hospital room in the clothes she arrived in.
Tokoyami was waiting for her.

"You ready to head home?", he asked, holding out an elbow for her to hold.

She sighed wistfully and held on to his elbow.
"Not really, but I have to."

"That's the spirit."

As they were leaving the hospital, Tokoyami told Kitsune that they needed to stop by his home for a change of clothes. He was still in his school uniform.

"Does this mean I get to see your house?", she asked excitedly, then winced at the pain in her shoulder blades.

She needed to take it easy.

It wasn't exactly peachy losing your wings.

No.

She couldn't think about it.

If she thought about them, she would start crying again.

"Are you okay?", Tokoyami asked her, looking down beside him at her.

Was she okay? Would she ever be okay?

"Yeah", she lied.

They walked in silence for a majority of the way back to their street.

Until something caught their eye.
