"Big or small, lies are lies." ~ Anonymous

“As not all of you are Candor-bred, we will start small. You are most likely all filthy liars, so to try and incline you to tell the truth, please feel free to comment at any time with your honest opinion.” The Candor-born girl snorts as though she doesn’t believe we will. She’s staring at us like we’re all lying scum from the lining of a frog’s belly. We’re not – that’s probably just me. If I were brave enough, I would comment on her fashion sense… but I’m not Dauntless material like my brother pretends he is.
Some hot guy initiate standing next to me is the real deal though – he speaks out, saying sarcastically, “Well, I’ve heard that filthy liars are lookin’ hot this season,” he says, gesturing to himself, “but putrid yellow hats with fancy feathers are most definitely so last year darling.” He strikes a provocative but obviously intentionally girly pose, batting his eyelids at our criticizer. I’m the first and only one to laugh out loud – everybody else just looks shy, politely tying to muffle their giggles, but I can’t help myself. No one in Erudite was like that. And the best part is, he’s not even just being cocky – he’s actually telling the truth. That guy has one rocking hot bod.
The girl, who can only be about our age, walks towards us menacingly before discarding her weird-looking hat and her disconcerting stare and strangely hugging us. When she pulls away, me and the hot dude, we’re both giving her that weird-eyebrow look that means ‘What the absolute hell?’ At least, I think it does – my experience in this field comes mainly from textbooks and documentaries. It’s always better to hide your emotions and what you feel in Erudite.
She’s laughing so hard now, both at our faces and the way that the hot dude is holding her hat (at arm’s length, pinched between his thumb and index finger). “I’m… Callie Pierson, Candor-born initiate and… major practical joker. Oh…” she bends over, her face red and tears welling in her eyes, “I can’t… believe the looks on your faces.” Callie finally gets a grip on herself, enough to stand up straight and kill her smile from ‘Ohmigod the unicorns are here’ happy to a smallish friendly but cheeky grin.
“So, you guys passed my awesomeness test. Wanna be best friends?” Hot guy and I smile at each other, before we reach out to link hands with Callie, our frank and forward Candor-born new best friend. A trio is a perfect friendship group, small and select. Maybe it would be good for me to get some friends, help me get over the bad memories. Sometimes it’s good to be free.
