"hi mommy." eddie greeted as he walked into his home. his mother sat in her usual spot on her recliner in front of the TV. "hi eddie bear, how was your day?" questioned his mother as she painted her nails a vibrant shade of pink. eddie stepped into the living room to continue the conversation with his mom, and noticed that she was painting her nails. eddie enjoyed the color pink very much, but didn't dare tell a soul. he observed his mom as she brushed the coat of paint onto her nails. "eddie? I asked you a question." his mother added, brining eddie out of his trance. "oh, uh it was fine, I got a lot of studying in. I also wanted to know if it was okay for richie to come over this evening and study. he said he liked my flash cards better than his." eddie ranted, hoping to convince his stubborn mother. "I suppose so..." she replied, causing a smile to spread across eddie's face. even though it seemed like eddie didn't enjoy richie's company, he did very much. richie was his best friend, but all friends can get on your nerves sometimes. "thanks mommy." eddie said giddily, and rushed to the phone in the other room.
he dialed richie's phone number into the the yellow phone and listened to the ringing. eddie always thought the connection ringing of a phone was very soothing, so he didn't mind standing and waiting for someone to pick up. "hello?" answered a familiar voice. "you can come over." eddie confirmed. richie could hear eddie's smile, and one cracked on his face, too. "okay, i'll be right over- "don't call me any nicknames." eddie interrupted, knowing richie's next move. "jeez eds calm down, i'll be right over." richie informed. the boys said their goodbyes and eddie ran up to his room, double checking everything to make sure it was perfect.
richie stood up from his bed and put back on his sweatshirt from earlier that day. he smoked one more cigarettes and made his way down the steps to exit his home. "where ya goin' boy?" spoke a raspy and slurred voice. "uh...over to a friends, we're studying.." richie replied in fear. he found that making smart remarks, or arguing with either of his parents usually resulted in richie getting hit in the face. "alright...you better be back soon." His father stated. "yes sir." his son confirmed, slowly making his way out of the house. he jogged off his porch and out of his yard onto the main sidewalk. the tall boy gradually journeyed to his friends house, hoping they could hang out more than study.eddie sat up in his room and reviewed his flash cards, awaiting richie's arrival. "eddie bear! answer the door!" called his lazy mother from downstairs. "yes mommy!" eddie called back as he rushed down the stairs and to the front door. he swung it open, and as expected, there stood his tall, pale friend. "good evenin' kasprak." richie greeted in a British voice making eddie giggle softly. eddie let richie in and quickly tried to get him up to his room before his mom could stop him for conversation. "oh richie! you've gotten so tall!" spoke eddie's mother, doing the opposite of his intentions. "it's been a while since i've been over hasn't it. and you aren't looking to bad yourself mrs.k. did you lose a few pounds?" richie conversed annoying eddie more and more, but he secretly loved it. "oh richie, you're such a pistol." mrs.kasprak complimented flustered. eddie grabbed richie's wrist and dragged him upstairs preventing another useless conversation that wasted eddie's precious time with richie.
eddie rushed him upstairs and into his freakishly clean room. eddie slowly shut the door so his mother wouldn't hear the creaks of the hinges, and slowly turned the knob into place. "since when were you not aloud to have your door shut?" richie probed flopping onto eddie's perfectly made bed. "since ninth grade, she thought I was in here master baiting or something." eddie elaborated sitting in his desk chair. "were you?" richie questioned, raising an eyebrow. "im not you rich, of course not." eddie replied straightening out his papers. "call me richie, the nicknames really piss me off." richie mocked, making eddie roll his eyes. "pick a subject." eddie insisted, preparing himself to study. "hanging out." richie replied sarcastically. "come on rich, I really wanna study." "and I really wanna hang out. your always studying or something and never hang out with the losers anymore. put the cards away and let's smoke some cigarettes or something." richie complained sitting up to face eddie. "sorry... ive just been struggling with a lot of stuff, and school is like my only escape believe it or not..." eddie ranted slouching in his chair. "why can't I be your escape? why can't the losers be your escape?" "because I benefit from school." "and you don't benefit from your friends?" richie wondered, intrigued to hear his friend's response. "no- it's not that, it's just- ugh rich I don't know how to explain it.. can we talk about something else?" eddie groaned. "no I wanna help, rant to me." richie insisted resting his head on his fist. "rich im serious just let it go, I really don't wanna talk about it.." eddie denied, looking down at his feet. "do you wanna hug?" richie asked.
eddie looked up from his feet to richie. was richie serious? usually he would've said it jokingly, but this time he seemed...very serious. "are you-" eddie started, but richie interrupted him. "yes eds, I'm being serious, this is a once in a lifetime offer, so if I were you, I would take the offer.." richie suggested with a heartfelt expression. eddie swallowed hard and stood up and walked over to his best friend. richie held his arms out and eddie threw himself into them. he squeezed his friend close and started sobbing. his tears trickled down his face and dropped onto the back of richie's maroon sweatshirt. "that's it let it out." richie comforted as he rubbed his best friends back.
