it was may, and there were about fifteen days left of school, and eddie had yet to return. eddie had been in the hospital for about a month, and was making amazing progress, and was going to be released very soon, but he decided to keep this a secret and surprise everyone.
the last five days of school were just celebrations or little classroom parties, and the day before the last day, was the end of the school year dance. richie didn't care much for the dances, he went to one and didn't have a lot of fun, he mostly sat on the bleachers with eddie and mad fun of everyone, because that's what richie does. richie this year didn't want to go to the end of the year dance, he'd much rather stay home and listen to music...and not smoke a whole carton of cigarettes.
eddie on the other hand was much different. he loved school dances, and went to every one that ever exsisted. he loved how everyone dressed up, and he always had fun messing around with the losers, minus richie, since he had only been to one dance. eddie was very aware of the upcoming dance, and wanted to ask richie to go with him, as more than friends this year, the only problem is that many girls every year surprisingly ask richie, but he always said no. he wasn't quite sure why, but he always dropped all of those girls, maybe just because he didn't plan on going.
eddie had been planning this since the beginning of may, and had each and every event laid out, he had a plan a, b and c. eddie was ready. he had called the losers and told them not to visit anymore under doctors orders so eddie could focus on gaining weight and reaching his goal, even though this was all a lie. eddie had already reached one hundred pounds, they just wanted to monitor him one more week to make sure the weight stayed on. eddie wanted to build the suspense for his return, and was most excited to see richie's reaction."hey richie, I was wondering...if you wanted to go to the dance with me?" asked a shy girl. she was short and thin, with thin glasses and long dark hair. "sorry hot stuff, but I already have a date." richie lied, causing the girl to blush in embarrassment. "oh, well I hope you have fun..." the girl mumbled and shuffled away. stan came up to richie and patted his back, "I know it's hard having so many girls after you, I feel your pain."
"stan you haven't had a date for a dance since sixth grade." richie remarked, irritating stan. "shut up, richie." he mumbled and walked off to his next class.
richie didn't really have a date, he just didn't want to go, and if he had to go again, he would much rather go with eddie. last year richie wanted to stay home and do his usual thing, but eddie dragged him along. richie complained all night about how he hated his experience at his first dance, and he'd much rather go do something else, but eddie insisted that they stayed.
richie this year, didn't know if he wanted to go to the dance or not. he would of course go with eddie if he wanted to go, but if not, he would gladly go do something else and avoid it all. he was almost sure eddie wouldn't want to go since he was just recovering from being in the hospital, and that he was gay, and richie didn't feel like murdering someone because of their ignorance. richie wanted to visit eddie and tell him that he didn't want to go to the dance, but eddie had informed him that he was not supposed to have any visitors. richie thought about eddie quite frequently, every day in fact. he always wondered if eddie was getting better, and he wondered if eddie was thinking about him just as much. richie would find himself writing eddie's name in the corner of the pages in his notebooks, with many hearts around it. god how he missed eddie."alright eddie, your final weight is 105, which is perfect, you don't need to lose or gain a pound more. we will release you tomorrow, and good luck with richie." the doctor winked and walked away with his clipboard. eddie did a silent victory dance and thought of how happy richie would be. he sat back down on his bed and couldn't stop smiling, he looked over at his bedside table and saw the rose that richie had gotten him. eddie had gotten a pot and some other supplies to keep it alive, he wanted it to live as long as his love for richie.
a knock came at the door and his mother stepped in, who hadn't been at the hospital since he had first been admitted. eddie panicked and quickly slipped on a pair of gloves he kept on his side table, to hide his baby blue finger nails. "eddie, I heard you were better, and you will be out tomorrow." his mother voiced as she plopped down on a chair beside him. "yep." eddie replied. "I also over heard you're conversation with the doctor, and he said something about richie, what was that about?" she probed slightly annoyed. "uh, nothing mommy." eddie swallowed hard and hoped his mother wouldn't ask anymore questions. "eddie, I found my makeup scattered around in the medicine cabinet, and my nail polish in your room. you better not be gay eddie, or we're going to have some serious issues, because I didn't raise a faggot." eddie's mom elaborated, standing up from her seat and getting into eddie's personal space. "I-I'm not gay mommy." eddie lied backing away from his mother in fear. "eddie, don't lie to me, because I know when you're lying, and you're doing it right now." she stated. her face was red with anger, and her knuckles were white from her tightly clenched fists. "mommy I-" eddie started, but was interrupted by his mother's hand coming in contact with his face. she leaned back and grabbed her purse, storming out of the hospital room.
