Chapter 23 - I Miss Her
—Tobias
Dinner last night was extremely awkward. I mean, it was great to get to see Mr. and Mrs. Prior again, and it was fun to see Caleb, Cara and Bea, but the whole time I just wanted to be alone with my girlfriend.
She's been with her brother for over a month.
I miss her.I've only really been able to catch up with her on the phone, and it's hard. I wanted to come early and get to have that alone time with her, but I had to take Indy to the vet for his vaccinations, and then I had to go back to the office and ended up late to dinner.
God, I wish I was alone with her.
She has started walking with her crutches now and bearing weight on her foot.
I've been with her though everything, and now I can't be there all the time once she's getting better.
I wanted to ask her yesterday if she has remembered anything like she did the day before she left, but that's another plan that was soiled from showing up late.
The night before last night I had been on the phone with Cara. She did catch me up a little, and she tries to in one way or another at least once a week on how Tris is doing and what she might not be telling me. She told me how Tris never sleeps, and then did offer me to stay as late as I might want after dinner to keep her company. I planned on doing so until I was called into an emergency meeting and had to leave before her parents did.
There's been a lot of violence outside of the fence lately. It's not within a few miles of our city, but it's close enough for concern. I decide to not tell Tris about this whenever I do get a chance to talk to her.
The last thing I need her to do right now is worry.
"Hey!" George waves to me from across the Pire, Amar following in tow.
"How was dinner?"
"When's she coming home?"
"Is she going crazy being in Erudite?"
"Did you get pictures of her niece? Oh how cute she was a few years ago I can't imagine!"They both pelt me with questions at the same time.
"She's walking, well, barely, and with her crutches, but she's walking!" I grin.
"I didn't get much of a chance to even talk to her. I ended up late to dinner because of having to meet up with Josh after the vet, then I had to leave early because of that meeting he called."
"So you were like right there with her and you literally said nothing?!" Amar mocks.
"Well obviously we talked dumbass, but like not without her brother and sister in law there, oh, and not to mention her parents."
"And her niece!" George pipes up.
I chuckle. "Yeah, she drew a picture of Indy, or at least some kind of creature that might resemble a dog, for me. I hung it on my fridge to remember my girlfriend isn't dying while living with her brother," I roll my eyes.
Amar snorts, finding my comment hilarious. George is still hung on the fact that I got a picture and how cute he thinks it must be.
"So, the real question. When is she coming home? It's been, what, a year now?"
"Feels like it, but it's been a little over a month. She had an ultrasound of her leg last week and everything was healing well, and since she's somewhat walking, hopefully soon."
"What determines when she comes home?"
"Either once she's up to shuttling over there however many times a week that she has therapy, or once she's done with PT all together."
