Chapter Six - Want Her Back

--Tobias

I told her I would be back the next day, but that was before there was an attempt of murder on our head Dauntless leader, Josh.

They know the person was female, but they believe she escaped the fence before they could catch her.

Either that or she's running rampage over the city and hiding in the shadows.

She knew what she was doing. She went through Dauntless initiation, got a profession at the control room, lived here for two years, then struck.

She stabbed him in the arm with a knife, dragging it upwards as he had proceeded to hold her in a head lock. Somehow, by the time I had arrived to the scene, he was on the ground and she was nowhere to be found.

Ever since, I've been in meetings filled with paranoia.

He has been out of the infirmary since yesterday, but wanted to meet with me today.

It saddens me to know that I won't be able to spend as long with Tris, and since I planned to take her outside two days ago, I was hoping to still do it later today.

"Four. I'm glad you could come." Josh says, walking into my office.

"Well, you kind of came to me," I chuckle. "But yeah, no problem."

"No Indy today?"

"I'm going to visit Tris in Erudite Med later, and I did tell her I was going to bring him, but I don't think I'm ready for a step in that direction yet."

"How is Tris?"

"Rehab has done wonders for her. She's a completely different person than she was three weeks ago. She's talking all the time, actually eating, and she told me they've got her working with crutches. She hates it, kind of, but I hope she is getting released soon. She's getting stir crazy being wheelchair-bound, so for her sake, I hope she'll be released soon."

"That's great to hear." He comments, but the look on his face shows me something is on his mind. He's looking down at the bandage that wraps his forearm from his wrist to below his elbow, hiding the stitches below it.

"What's up?"

"I didn't bring this up at meetings because of the drama that would erupt from it, but it involves Tris," he says, never looking up.

"Before the girl stabbed me, she rolled up her sleeve. She always wore long sleeves, or big bracelets on her wrist. She has a branded burn mark identical to Tris's on her wrist. I've seen pictures of Tris's in the IB files, and they're the same thing, in the same area."

"Where is this branded seal from?" I ask, my face feeling hot.

"The people still working in IB traced it to New York way back. It was their Dauntless seal before the factions broke there along with the city. Now, all the citizens are basically Dauntless males, running around playing alpha and killing others for sport."

"If it's all males, then why have two females, Tris and this woman, been branded with this seal?"

"Four," he finally looks up. "There's more females than the two of them."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, New York is already two steps ahead of us."

"How?!"

"This morning there was a band of people at the fence that were sent away. Security picked up about a dozen females with the same mark on their wrist. They wanted to get into the city, but were denied for inaccurate reasoning. They left peacefully, but did threaten to return."

"What's the big deal about them?"

"Before the girl fought me, she talked with me for a while. She told me about the training she has had, and how what she learned in Dauntless training would've never been enough to get by."

"What does that mean?"

"They're better fighters than we are, and they'll fight for what they want."

"Which is...?"

"Tris." He doesn't make eye contact with me. "They want her back."
