shhhh...
little murmurs
caught in the claws of time
silver colored
sounds
tinged with
old age
random
words
a slew
from
grammy's mouth...
her death
loomed
above her head
a whisper of a curl
a ghost of an angel
hovering
hissing
howling
waiting.
i wanted to hold
her clammy hand
her 85-year-old visage
kiss her eyelids
for one last time
say
'goodbye'.
but i couldn't.
i saw the ghost of an angel
peeking from beneath his shroud
warning me to not let her know
that she was indeed breathing in
one of her last breaths
shhhh...
i pinched my lips tight
gave a resigned nod
and instead told grammy,
"don't stress yourself out
mammy,
i came in
just to see you.
i heard from Sami,
you were terribly sick again.
i had to see you."
what i didn't add was,
"one last time..."
two days later,
my grammy raised,
went went went
went somewhere
where God and angels and heaven and hell
existed.
i miss you so much,
mammy.
your easy smiles, your soft laughter, your wrinkled face.
i pray you are well.
see you in the afterlife,
mammy.
