"I'm going on a walk through the castle." Jared announced loudly at the dinner table, getting up. "Don't disturb me." He glared at the guards by the table, who nodded subtly.
He walked down several hallways, seemingly going nowhere in particular. When he knew for certain no one was following him, he leaned against the wall.
Any bystander would have been shocked to see the wall flip around, but Jared knew what he was doing. He grabbed the torch on the wall, and followed the dark and winding staircase.
"Jared?"
"Yeah, it's me." Jared couldn't help but smile when he heard the boys voice. "I brought you food. Sorry I couldn't come earlier."
"No, no I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" Jared asked, sitting across from Evan, handing him the food. He glanced worriedly at the boy behind bars as he took the food. "For what?"
"You... you always risk yourself for me. I'm sure... I'm sure someone's suspicious of you by now. With you coming down here and all."
"Don't mind them. I can behead them if I need to." At Evans hollow laugh, Jared cleared his throat. "Sorry. Bad joke."
"Just a bit." Evan meekly smiled. "But it's okay."
"No, it's not." Jared said firmly, ending the conversation. "So uh..." Jared trailed off, looking around as if the dark dungeon would give him something to talk about. "How'd you get imprisoned? I know you don't like to talk about it, but..."
"They don't teach social education in 'prince training', do they?" Evan smiled, showing he meant no harm by his words. "And uh, it wasn't anything impressive. I promise."
"Tell me." Jared paused before adding, "Please. I want to know."
"Well, I uh, I stole a loaf of bread for my brother. He was out in the pillory, in the middle of town." Evan took a bite of his food, remembering the night. "He was ridiculed for being in love with another man, Sir Michael. I'm sure... I'm sure..." Evan took a shaky breath. "He's bound to be dead now. It's a crime, you know." Evan laughed dryly. "Thank you for the food. You should go before you get in trouble.
Jared stayed sitting on the floor. He bit his cheek, thinking of the right words to say. "I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry." Jared stood up, standing as tall as he could. "What is your brothers name?"
"Was... and Jeremy."
"Well, Evan Hansen, the fairest in the land," Evan couldn't help but laugh at that. "I promise you, I will allow those who love, to love freely. Unless the man lies with a small boy. That's just fucked up."
Evan chuckled, reaching out to Jared. He cupped Jared's cheek, pulling him as close as they could be with the metal bars. "I'm sorry if this is just making it worse, but... Prince Jared, I love you."
"Evan Hansen... you only make things better."
