"So... your uh, your tutor is uh... hot."

"Yep."

"That's, uh, that's. That's cool."

"Yep." Jared continued to ignore Evan, playing his video game to avoid any conversation.

"Are you two... close?"

"Fuck, Evan." Jared paused the game, angrily glaring at Evan. "Why do you care? For the past fucking two weeks all I hear about is her! Man, before you were all like, I don't know, you just, you talked about everything. Now you don't! What the fuck man?"

"Uh. Well, I just. Uh, she's, uh, you know. Yeah."

Jared studied Evan with a look of disbelief on his face before it turned to one if understanding. "Oh my god. I finally get it."

"Get, uh, get what?" Evan asked, his face heating up. "I don't, uh, I don't, I don't understand?"

"You have a crush on her!"

"Oh." Evan released the breath he was holding, smiling uneasily. "Yeah. Uh, whoops."

"Oh my god! That's great! I'm gonna hook you two up."

Well, Evan thought. This is probably better than him finding out about my crush on him.

———

This is not better than him finding out about my crush on him. Abort, abort.

"So, Jared set us up?"

"Yeah, I uh, I guess, I guess he did, huh?" Evan fidgeted with his polo, looking anywhere but the girl in front of him.

"Hey, Look man. I'm sorry, but uh, I'm... dating someone?"

"Wait, you are?" Evan let out a breath of relief. "Oh thank god. Not that I didn't want to go on a date with you! I mean, I did, but like, uh, no, I didn't, but not in a bad way! It's just-"

"Hey, it's okay. I swear dude."

The girl across from him took out her phone, sliding over a picture of a beautiful girl with warm dark beige skin, smiling wide. She had a colorful hijab wrapped around her head, and the girl in front of Evan wrapped around her shoulders. "That's her. Sorry to uh, disappoint you my dude." She bit her lip, looking around. "Also, uh, don't tell anyone, okay? Her family isn't like, uh, tolerable of that gay shit."

"No! No, of course not, it's fine. Totally fine, I swear. Also? I uh, didn't want to... date... you...?"

"Wait, I'm confused." The girl pushed back her hair, grabbing the phone back. "Then why are we here? I thought Jared-"

"Okay, so uh, I like him, but he is idiot and thought I meant you? I guess. Sorry."

"Oh. No, it's fine." The girl smiled, pushing back her hair. "Jared has a tendency to uh... not read between the lines. He's better at things like math and science because he can like, you know, get it. With English, he just... you know? He's bad at reading things in general."

"Tell me about it."

"Hey, Evan, right?"

"Yeah, uh, yeah. Sorry."

"Don't be." The girl picked up her coffee, standing up. "Why don't we make a deal. You help me plan a little surprise for my girlfriend, and I'll help you win over your little boy toy. Deal?"

"Deal..." Evan trailed off, hoping the girl would say her name. When she got the hit, she smiled wide.

"All my friends call me Buttercup. So if this goes well... maybe you'll get to call me that to."

"Oh. Geez. Uh, thanks."
