Warped Tour was taking place a few blocks over, and every spot nearby was taken. I sighed, realizing the distance I had to walk. I decided to volunteer at FEED THE BAND, SEE THE BAND, the organization that was catering. As a result, you were able to go backstage to see a band that partnered with them. As It Is was one of them today, so I figured this would be a foolproof way to see Patty and surprise him.
I got there just in time to volunteer from 11-2. As It Is was playing at 2:30, so I would have just enough time to use the bathroom and head to the owly.fm stage. Even though the catering was inside and the a/c was on full blast, I was still sweating bullets. Most of the bands got food early, so I pretty much either stood around or organized equipment. I was able to get some of the food myself, and it was pretty good.
I sprinted outside the second I was cleared to go. That was a huge mistake because the heat hit me like a punch to the stomach. I went and bought an overpriced fan and walked to the stage. "Hi, I need to get backstage." I said, flashing my wristband the guy standing outside.
He led me behind the stage right next to a box of their equipment. I thanked him, and did my best to not catch Patty or anyone else's eye. They came on the stage the same side where I was standing, and thankfully none of the guys recognized me since my back was to them.
I sung along to songs I knew the words to and also posted short clips to social media. A few minutes later the set was over and the guys walked past me, except Patty turned around almost right away. "Holy shit, I didn't expect you to come!" He said, hugging me tightly. "Well, Surprise!" I replied.
"I missed you so much," Patty said, pulling me closer to him. I breathed in deeply to prevent the tears that welled up in my eyes from falling. I lived in the states, so Patty and I usually went many weeks without seeing each other in person. We talked almost every day, but nothing compares to actually being with him physically. I calmed down, reminding myself how much time I spent on eye makeup this morning.
We stayed in a tight embrace for a few more moments. We began walking to the As It Is tent for a signing as Patty filled me in on things he hasn't had the time to tell me. "The Warped Charity Bowing event was the other day, and every time I participate I'm reminded that I can't fucking bowl. The guys in Grayscale keep making fun of us and I'm sick of it," he remarked as we got to the tent.
I took photos of fans with the guys at their signing, and helped organize merch at the tent for a bit as the guys had to do an interview. Patty took me to their tour bus a short while later. "This is pretty nice," I said, climbing into Patty's bunk. "Yeah, I'm so sick of it though." He replied, climbing in next to me. The bunk was little cramped, and I was practically laying on top of him. I'd take what I could get though.
We stayed like that for a while. I sighed deeply, realizing I'd have to leave soon. "I should probably get going." I said, climbing out of Patty's bunk. I hugged him tightly and desperately painted this picture in my memory as I walked many blocks back to my car, tears falling down my face.
