I read the note at least 20 times and every time I reread it, chills ran down my arms. I have no idea how I got into a mess without intentionally wanting to get into it.
I ran my hands down my hair and opened the music app to calm my mind while I showered. Still as much as I tried to block everything from my head , I was nervous. At this point I don't even know if I was nervous because of Elijah, Harrison, or the job itself.
I stepped out of the shower and threw on the first thing I saw laying on the floor which was a romper. The texture of the outfit seemed a bit too much for this whether. I was starting to reach out for something else when I heard my name being called out.
"Yes?" I said shouting back.
"Your friend lost her phone and Jack said she needs to talk to you. She'll meet us for breakfast." He said. I heard him come closer to he door as the wooden floor creaked at his every step.
I didn't say anything as I dressed up as quickly as I could and tied my hair up in tight bun. Literally, even my brain started hurting is that possible?
I grabbed on some slip ons and walked out the door.
"Alright let's go." With that I grabbed my keys and walked out with Elijah following behind.
--
We drove in silence. I could tell he was judging my car by the way he shifted uncomfortably on the seat while dusting off the window.
"I'm guessing you're not used to this. You probably have like 5 different cars of the year." I said while speeding off faster.
"I mean I'd be lying if I said no. But the car isn't a problem. It's the dust on the windows. Do you even take it to wash?" He said laughing while leaning back. I looked over as the sun hit his pale skin and he squinted his eyes.
"Honestly the car is the least of my worries." I managed to say.
"Why's that?" He jolted in. Before I could even say anything I saw the big IHOP sign come up to a closer view.
"We're here." I said making a left turn.
We found a parking spot as no one really was around. I locked the door and got out.
"Hey you didn't even let me get the door open for you." I heard Elijah say as he followed me inside.
"I'm pretty sure I'll manage. Besides I'm pretty sure you weren't there to open my moms vagina walls as I crawled out right?" He stared wide eyed as I said that and i just laughed it off.
Wow I guess this is why I've been alone for 5 years now.
The aroma of fresh made pancakes and syrup filled the place. Not many people were seated so it was easy to spot Mays long curls from afar.
I started walking in their direction and her head turned around. She flashed a smile and pointed to the seat in front of her.
I slid down the booth as Elijah slid besides me.
"We ordered your drinks but not the food. Didn't really know what you guys wanted anyways." Jack said.
He turns around to Elijah and starts talking to him.
"I heard they were looking all over for you. Apparently someone ratted us out." He said.
I was just starting to notice how neither may nor jack had that glowing smile they usually had. I'm guessing something was going on.
"Don't worry. Grant called and said it was one of the new interns we had come in. It's not certain if they came from Harrison or Mark." Jack grabbed his glass of cold water and drinker it all slamming the Cup back down a bit hard.
May just had her head down not saying much.
"Have you talked to Damon? He wants to go into Harrison's office to talk to him. I'm telling him it's going to get him killed." Once jack said that I looked up immediately wide eyed.
Soon, it felt as if the air around me started vanishing and it was difficult to breathe.
"E-excuse m-me." I barely managed to say as I pushed through Elijah to get out of the booth. I heard footsteps approach and I immediately knew it was May.
"Hey what's wrong?" She said. I went to restroom sink and splashed water onto my face. The cold splash made my breathing a bit steady. I got a hold of the faucet and looked back at her.
"I don't know how I can tell him."
"Tell who? Say what?" She said coming a bit closer.
"I'm going to start working for Harrison. I got the job and he pretty much owns the company. Hey expect me there in five days." I say looking up at the tainted mirror and turning around to face her.
"Oh shit." She said. She stood there not knowing what to say. I mean nothing she could have said would have changed anything. I don't even know if something could have been done. Not only would I be getting one of my dreams jobs, I would be working with someone who wants to murder Elijah. His own blood.
"You can't tell him. You can't tell jack." I said holding her hands.
She looked up at me and stood there in silence.
"I mean now that we're alone I guess I should tell you something. Alex hasn't been showing up to work lately. I tried calling her but it sends me straight to voicemail."
"Didn't Jason come back to town?" I said. Jason is Alex's younger brother by 4 years. Andres is the older one. He moved away with his grandparents to Sacramento and only visits when he has the chance.
"She would have called us to throw him a little surprise party like always." At this point we moved to the corner of a wall as some old ladies kept coming in staring at us.
"We should go back. The guys are probably wondering what's going on." I was about to walk out when May grabbed my hand before I could manage to open the door.
"That's not it. Sabri I think- i think I'm pregnant." Her eyes started glistening as she said that. If I wasn't pale enough I'm pretty sure my face turned completely blank and clueless.
"You're what?" I said.
She didn't say anything else other than hug my as tight as she could.
Not knowing what else to do I hugged her back and rubber her shoulders.
"There there. Have you gotten a test?" I asked her.
"No. But I'm two weeks late." She said wiping her cheeks.
"Hey baby if you are pregnant that's amazing. I mean aren't you happy? You and Jack would be great parents." I said moving away the hair from her face.
"I know but it's more complicated. I don't want my baby to grow around surrounded by danger. And I mean god I don't even know how to tell you." She said putting her face on her hands.
"Tell me what?" I said.
May was about to say something when someone started banging on the door.
I opened it and Elijah was standing there.
"What's wrong?" I said. Not opening the door completely.
"Someone followed us here. We have to go."
