Chapter 1

Lucas' POV

"...Yes! You said that right! You said that exactly right!" I exclaimed as I looked into her gorgeous blue eyes. No doubt in my mind that I'd made the right choice. I tried to speak but I just stuttered incoherently and she continued.

"So go, go find Riley and tell her you love her." She was so sincere. So understanding. But she doesn't understand. It's not Riley I chose. It's her. It's always been her. But I can't speak. I'm in shock and I'm disappointed.

She leans over and hugs me but let's go almost too quickly. She allows her hand to linger on mine for a moment longer as I just stare at her in disbelief. And then she's walking across the room to him. Josh Matthews. He smiles at her and takes her hand. They walk out the door and I'm left there, silently dying inside.

"Hey Lucas!" I hear and look up. Of course its Riley. A smile stretched across her face and her eyes lit up like the fourth of July. I'm not surprised though, that's just her face. That's just who Riley is.

"Hey back." I say, rather monotone,  causing her face to fall ever so slightly.

"So I heard you made your choice, and judging by the fact that Maya left with Josh after telling me about their 'someday' deal, you told her you chose me." Riley looks at me with hopeful eyes. I don't know what to say. She's such a sweet girl and I dont want to hurt her. I never wanted anyone to get hurt. That's why I took so long to choose. I never thought Maya would choose for me, and make the wrong choice. I never thought I'd be in this position.

"I just need a minute." I say as I quickly move from the fire place and head out the door. I can feel Riley's eyes on me as I cross the room. I've never been so grateful to feel the cool crisp air of autumn hit my face.

I decide to take a walk. A long walk. I have too much on my mind and there's too many distractions back at the lodge. So, I shove my hands into my jean jacket pockets and follow the nearest trail.
