Lucas' POV

I told her I chose her. I told her she was the one I chose, I think to myself. I clearly placed the ball in her court, and she looked at it for a moment before she walked away. She made her choice. She chose him, that much was clear by the heated makeout session earlier today on the bus. I'm so glad to be home. To be off that bus.

I'm lost in my thoughts when the familiar sound of my phone buzzing brings me back to reality. I huff in annoyance as I reach for it. It'll be Riley.  She'll want to call, to talk about us. I sigh turning over the phone to reveal a name I was both shocked and confused by.

MAYA♡
We need to talk. Now.

ME:
You call, I come. I'm easy like that (:

MAYA♡
Not funny. Meet me?

ME:
When and where?

MAYA♡
Outside my building. 10 minutes Huckleberry. Don't keep me waiting.

I look at the clock. Its 11:00pm on the dot. I jump up, quickly checking my hair in the mirror, smoothing my shirt and popping a piece of gum in my mouth. I smile at myself and head out.

I allow myself a moment to just take her in. Her hair in a messy bun, sweats hanging loosely from her body, the way she's tapping her foot while she stares down the street in the opposite direction of me. I feel a smile playing on my lips and think, 'to hell with it'! I walk up silently behind her, closing the space between us, wrapping my arms around her waist, pulling her against my chest.

"Miss me, shortstack?" I ask in a playful tone. My bliss is cut short when she pulls away from me, turning around to glare at me.

"What is wrong with you Lucas?! What is it that's floating around in that tiny boy brain of yours that thinks that any of this is okay?!" Okay, so she's yelling at me, late at night, in a pretty sketchy area of New York. As she continues to tell me how stupid I am, I watch her. I watch the way she flails her hands trying to make things clear. I watch the way she furrows her eyebrows and crinkles her nose. I watch her lips, plump and naturally pink, as she continues to yell at me. I can't take it anymore.

I move closer, confidently. I bring my hands to her face just like I did in Texas, only this time, there is no hesitation. No second thoughts. I crash my lips onto hers, silencing her. I expect her to kiss me back, but she doesn't. She pushes me away, looking at me in disbelief, and takes a few steps back.

"Maya I-" I begin, but she hastily cuts me off, looking at me like I had just kicked a puppy.

"No. You don't get to do that. You don't get to ever do that!" She tells me, looking down now, shaking her head, her voice almost a whisper.

"Maya, listen-" she cuts me off again.

"Goodnight Lucas." She says sternly, turning on her heal and walking back into her building. I'm left there, silently dying inside.

I turn to walk back in the direction in which I came, allowing thoughts of her to flood my mind. She was it. She was the one, even if she didnt see it yet. I'm not giving up.
