29. The Search

" Alright Guys we are starting in Shadowbrook don't venture farther than that for now." Winston said on a megaphone. They were starting a search in the forest. There were about 20 - 30 people in the search. They were starting in Shadowbrook the largest and most open part of the woods. " Jesse over here!" Bella called huddling together with Maddox.

Jesse had arrived a few minutes late as usual. " Okay guys we need to stay together." Maddox said slowly glancing around at the woods.
An older woman about 85 was hobbling around clutching a walking stick hard. " Sorry guys." But it looks like I'm going to have to search buddies with someone else." Jesse sadly said before walking toward the older woman. Bella and Maddox watched as Jesse helped the older woman walk slowly. When the older woman tripped she collapsed into Jesse's arms. Jesse caught her and shot a thumbs up towards them.

After the search had started everybody went their separate ways and started looking. Bella crunches through leaves softly as she walked next to Maddox. Maddox had his signature beanie hat pulled snugly against his hand to fight the cold.

" Maddox why were you at the school in the first place?" Bella said softly after a few moments it was a better time now than never.
Maddox took a deep breath and stuffed his gloves hands into his pockets. " My father's name is John Helms you've probably heard of him." Maddox started slowly. " As in John Helms the famous drug dealer?" Bella said softly not wanting to hurt him.
" Yeah, He's in jail for the rest of his life." Maddox said softly.
" I'm so sorry Maddox." Bella said sadly, putting her hand at the small of his back. " It's okay. I was never close with my father and when I found out he was selling drugs that were killing people I wanted him to go to jail.
Which is messed up to think of your father but I couldn't live the same way again." He said frustratedly.
" I understand." Bella said calmly.

They walked a little more before Maddox continued his story.
" So I was living with my Mom and my little sister Ellie when one morning I woke up and she was gone. No note nothing. just gone." Maddox said slowly. " That must have been terrible." Bella said shaking her head slowly. " Yeah, it was." Maddox said softly. " So why were you in the school that early?" Bella asked carefully. Not wanting to push to far. " After they left I was broke and homeless. I had no job at 13 years old and I couldn't get one. I tried and I couldn't so I went to live with my Great Aunt Elena and it was amazing. She had a lot of money and she was a incredible person but then she had a heart attack." Bella was silent waiting for the end of his story.
" So I found out that she had rewritten her will entitling me to Hundreds of thousands of Dollars and more including her house. But as soon as my cousins and uncles and aunts found out that a 15 year old was getting all the money they immediately stripped me off all of it and kicked me out of the will completely. So again I was broke and homeless but now I had no one to turn to. So I took a bus back here where my family originally was and I enrolled at HillCrest so I had to catch up for two years but now I'm caught up and I'm living there." Maddox said the last part very softly.
" Your what?!" Bella said softly harsh whispering. As people started to look near them. " I told you already I really don't feel like repeating it." Maddox said whispering back as the people came closer. Bella took his arm and led him of a different path then they were currently taking to avoid the others.

That's when they heard it.

A single cry filled the air.
