Chapter 5
Chris didn't jog with us. Chris didn't walk with us to school. Chris didn't say 'hello' to me in class. Chris didn't sit with us at lunch.
Gym is my worst subject. It is the reason why I wouldn't get into a good college. I get at least a-'s in all of my classes except for Gym. I get C's and D's in Gym. Gym is the class that everyone passes, but I almost fail. I hate Gym, it is unfair. I think that Gym hates me. Everyone knows how Gym and I feel about each other.
Today was Dodgeball, the day that most non-athletically inclined students arew afraid of. The day that you learn who's one of your friends. The day that you might be embarrassed in front of class, if you haven't already embarrassed yourself. Since dodgeball is the second day of school, if I don't do well to help my team win, I might be the last person chosen in any games.
Chris and some other guy named Adam were the captains, the choosers. I knew for sure that Chris was going to choose Lasharee, she was great in Gym, especially in her favorite activity, which was Dodgeball.
"Nikki." Who the heck was calling me first? "Nikki." I looked up and it was unexpededly calling me to be one his team. I was the first person on his team. I walked up and stood behind him. "I only did this because I know you suck at Dogeball" he whispered in my ear. "Lasharee," was what he said next. "And I still care about you a little, but don't expect this to change anything between us," Chris whispered. Then he went back to calling people to be on his team.
The stupid Gym teacher blew the whistle: "And let the games begin!" Stupid Gym Teacher yelled. I call everything that deals with Gym stupid, even the teachers -just not when I'm talking to them. I stood there and watched. Lasharee ran back to me and handed me a dodgeball.
"When you throw it, act like your boxing. Like your about to punch someone in the face," Lasharee told me.
"Yeah, just like boxing," I said, bouncing the ball between my hands. I occasionally box, professionally, co-ed. Guys never see it coming, since I look so awkward with the gloves on.
"Just don't throw it at anyone's head, neck, or crotch. And make sure you duck and dodge," Lasharee said, before running into the front lines and throwing a ball at a random guys stomach. I did half of what Lasharee, I ducked and dodged. The ball never left my hands. The game went on for ten minutes before something unfair happened.
Lasharee and Chris themselves had gotten out half of our opponents team. One of our team members fell and looked like she twisted her ankle. Lasharee bent down to get the girl to the sidelines, when Adam threw a dodgeball at Lasharee and put her out of the game. That was completely wrong of him, so I threw the ball the I still had -the one that Lash gave me when the game began- right at Adam's stomach. He doubled over at went tot the sidelines. Afterwards I kept throwing the dodgeballs and making people double over. The game was over in three more minutes.
My team high-fived me, except for Chris.
"Gym teacher, may I go to the restroom?" I asked.
"Sure, hon," Stupid Gym Teacher said. I walked out, taking my metal compass with me. I needed to cut right then. While walking down the hall I saw Jake. He was half of the reason why Chris was mad at me. The longest Chris ever was mad at me was for five minutes, when I super-glued a sucker in his hair. It was only revenge for him kissing me in my sleep, which I didn't count as being my first kiss.
I lunged at Jake with the compass. The compass point was almost a centimeter for his eye, before my hand was stopped. I pulled away to see Chris. He must've been on his way to the bathroom. Seeing that tinge of anger in his eyes, like from yesterday after school, only made me want to cut more. I ran into the girls bathroom and sat on the floor.
Chris' POV:
Nikki ran into the the girls bathroom, with the compass in hand.
"What was all of that about?" Jake laughed. I really don't like this guy. He took my best friends virginity.
"She almost stabbed you in the eye, idiot," I yelled. I know I shouldn't call people idiots.
"Woah, don't call me the idiot, I'm not the one not talking to her!" he laughed. I think this guy is either high or drunk. He is a bit mellow and is laughing at everything. It didn't matter though, because either way I punched him in the face.
"She needs to learn from her mistakes!"
"Calm down," Jake said nodding his hands down. Is Matthew McConaughey stuck in his body? I shouldn't of punched him, violence is not the answer. I also shouldn't have these sudden outbursts of anger.
"You want to know something?" Jake whispered. I didn't answer. "It was all a bet. I got fifty bucks for banging your friend." 'That's it!' I thought. I punched him in the face again.
"Chris!" The voice of Nikki screamed. I ran into the girls bathroom, to see an unusual amount of blood coming out her wrist.
"Go get the nurse now! It's an emergency!" I yelled to Jake. He ran down the empty hall. I forgot that this was the hallway only used for morning classes.
I pulled out some paper towels, putting them on her arm and applying pressure. I hoped that this was an accident, and not a suicide attempt.
"I made a mistake," Nikki cried, with tears streaming down her face. "I wasn't paying attention." I wondered what event she was talking about, but it was probably about the current situation. "I'm sorry." I didn't know what to say, it was hard enough never really talking to her.
'What would Jesus do? Probably heal her, and say something about being forgiven. What would Jesus do, if he was trying to give her the silent treatment? I have no idea' I thought. So I stayed silent. The nurse rushed in, doing something to Nikki's wrist and then put a bandage over it.
I walked Nikki back to class. Every so often she would look at me. I stopped to open the door. However, before I did, Nikki hugged me.
"Thanks for coming," she whispered in my ear. She wiped a tear from my cheek which I didn't even know came out of my eye. "Just follow my lead when we get in there." I opened the door and followed Nikki inside.
"And what took you two so long? And why are you two together?" Ms. Beauford asked.
"I was in the bathroom and slipped. I ended up cutting myself on the sink," Nikki said.
"I happened to hear her scream and ask for help, so I got a student who was in the hallway to go to the nurse for help, while I ran in and tried to stop the bleeding," I said. The words just flowed through my mouth before I even knew. I don't really lie much, and normally the lies I tell suck.
"Okay," Ms. Beauford nodded her head, "Back to work!" She yelled at the class, they started to do laps around the class. I joined in, leaving Nikki alone. I just hope that she didn't hurt herself because of me.
