At first sight

Chapter 21

"Erm.. do you want to change in my place?" Evangeline asked Carl, and glanced over to Peter who was standing behind all the time.

Carl nodded and gestured for his assistant to stay put as he entered her place. Embarrassment was clearly displayed on her face when she noticed the mess at her place. Surprisingly that scene earned a gentle smile on Carl's face.

"I'm glad to see this side of you."

Evangeline blinked twice at his words, it was such simple words yet they held so much love. Teasingly she said, "are you sure you have zero experience when it comes to dating?"

Without waiting for a reply, she pulled him to her bedroom to get changed. Carl embraced her from the back as she turned around to leave, making Evangeline blushed. "Will you be my girlfriend?" Carl asked softly into Evangeline's ear, sending pleasurable shivers down her spine. The temptation was so strong, but she somehow managed to resist it. After a moment of silence, she turned around in his arms and gave him a quick smile before she fled to the kitchen. Settling down seemed just right for her, but was she ready? Will she ever be?

Carl was not sure why Evangeline is still hesitating, but he is willing to wait. After all, this woman is worth waiting for. Carl subconsciously lets out a sad sigh as he put on his suit.

Evangeline headed towards her door after she heard the doorbell rang, thinking it was Peter, she opened the door swiftly only to come face to face with Logan.

"Hi I am busy, let's talk next time."

Logan caught on the door before it slams right in front of his face.

"We need to talk. Why did you switch hospital without telling me?"

"Huh? You are the one working for that old man to stalk me, aren't you supposed to find out without me telling you?" With that Evangeline made Logan speechless.

" You could have told me as a friend. We grew up together. Don't you value our friendship?" He exclaimed.

" What friendship? You chose the mob over our friendship."

Hurt displayed in Logan's eyes, it was not that choice of words that hit him but how Evangeline simply reply him in a calm and collected manner, with no anger or whatsoever. She simply replied in a matter of fact tone.

"Evans," Logan spoke as he reaches out for Evangeline's hand. "Perha-"

Before Logan come into contact with Evangeline, he was stopped by a man's voice.

"Lynn."

Logan's head snapped towards the direction of the voice, he watched a man in a suit and black mask walked towards them and stood beside her. Evangeline returned Carl's affectionate gaze with a gentle smile. Logan's jaw tightened at the scene, he was clearly taken aback.

"Who are you?" Logan clenched his fists as he spat out those words.

"I think you should leave Logan." Evangeline said flatly, avoiding his questions, she let go of Logan took a deep breath to compose himself, just when he was about to walk through the door, he gently warned, "Evans... Don't do anything recklessly or make any wrong decisions. The old man will find out, and I will not be able to protect you next time."

Evangeline understood, the old man had plans for her marriage years ago, and he would never let go of that. He already lost all of his heirs, including herself who ran away, his only choice would be his future son-in-law because he would never pass it to someone not related to him. With the thought of protecting both Evangeline and the old man as well, Logan had agreed to the marriage arrangement and promised to take over the mob. He knew, if the old man continues to pester Evangeline, she would eventually kill the old man. Evangeline's anger towards him was not just because Logan had been following her and reporting on her whereabouts and conditions, but that he made this decision without respecting her as a friend and hid it away from her. To be honest, it was not like she could not leave the country and hide away from Logan, she did not do so as Rose was not keen to do so, and perhaps a part of Evangeline did not want to leave as well. In anyways, Evangeline does not see a point from hiding from Logan nor anyone from the mob, it would be interesting to know what was up on the old man's sleeves.

In the lobby, Logan spotted another man in a suit, Peter Marks - the left-hand man of Carl Hallsworth. Why is Peter Marks here?

"I apologise that I interfere." Carl held her hand as she stared at the empty corridor, deep in thoughts.

"It's alright. I think you should head back."

"Mmm." Carl left the apartment, with Peter following quietly behind. There were lots of question running through Carl's head, but he decided not to pursue or get Peter to look into it, after all, he knew Evangeline would appreciate some privacy.

Logan heard the clicking sound of their footsteps and watched them from behind. What was the possibility of Carl Hallsworth being related to Evangeline, who was that man, and why is Peter Marks here, he wondered as he watched the two men walked into the lift, he made sure to embed their features clearly in his mind.
