"Write a romantic sonnet that will strum the strings of their hearts and make them go mushy and soft on the inside."

The ballroom roof was a velvet canopy lit by tiny stars,
The polished floors shone, much like the mirrors on the wall,
With soft satin drapes and fairy lights wrapped on the pillars,
Everything was in its place, all set for the grand charity ball.
His mind, however, was on an ivory and gold edged cover,
An invitation to the much coveted dinner and dance,
As he signed off his approval, he again mulled it over,
Maybe he should attend and take up the offered chance.
It was not often that Lady Luck smiled upon him thus,
And attending a dinner was not too much to ask.
'He would be smart and careful, not soar like Icarus,'
Resolved he firmly, slipping on the black velour mask.
It was just a dance and could be an evening of delight,
And maybe, he would find someone special tonight?

She watched from the shadows, her heart skipped a beat,
'He came', it sang; and her body in ecstatic warmth did bask;
Despite being incognito, he could, in her, bring out the heat,
But she knew him too; she had sent the cover and the mask.
Over the last two years, since upon him, she had first set eyes;
She always watched him from far; with a love that gently grew.
They rarely worked together, yet, her feelings she couldn't disguise,
He was fair and courteous to all, kind and good-looking too.
Tonight she would take a chance, and caution to the winds, fling,
It would be just a single dance, just a few moments in his arms.
Tonight she would rejoice, in the warmth his company would bring,
It would be a last chance; to be swept away by his many charms.
The divide of wealth and poverty, many a life does blight,
But she wanted to have a fairy tale, if only for a night.

He swirled, she whirled, they twirled; together they set the floor afire,
In the darkness soft, he stole a kiss;  and she surrendered to  her heart;
Another deep kiss followed; and they blazed with equal flaming desire,
But every story has an end; she knew they would now have to part.
"Stay" he whispered, longing and desire burning in his voice,
Despite the tingles in her being, she breathed a very reluctant no.
He would never realise;  for it could never be just her choice,
And if she stayed back, she would never be able to let him go.
Pulling free, she ran; quick and nimble as a fleeing doe,
Vanished into the darkness; before his wits he could gather.
Ran into her gilded world, one where he could never follow,
For he was a mere paid staff, working for her wealthy father.
The shadow of wealth is dark and though love is the soul's light,
Yet, all she could do was, be Cinderella, only for a night.

Word count (of the sonnets) - approximately 485

A/N  - And who would have thought that romance was hard, I never did, till I had to write a sonnet for this prompt.

So sonnet, yes it is; romantic - hopefully.
