I lurk in the corners of your heart,
Speaking in whispers, softly incessant;
Slowly, and surely, I'll tear you apart,
As for the unattainable, you hunt.Silken touches that caresses your soul,
Honeyed suggestions, impossible to ignore;
Whatever you do, you can't plug the hole,
However much you get, you hunger for more.Always craving for what others have,
Never pleased with your lot in life;
Willingly you turn into my knave,
Spending your time in eternal strife.I awaken in you, unquenchable desire;
Then draining you out, set you on fire.One of seven, Vanity's good friend,
She makes you proud of what you earn;
Yet, into black depths, you'll descend,
As I fill your heart with that familiar burn.Peace, you'll never have, eternal is your distress,
Though you've been warned, you never heed;
There's never an end for your need to possess,
When you welcome me, you also invite Greed.You covet neighbours, friends and family too,
You'd steal from a babe, not caring a dime;
Craving, wanting, yearning, that's all you do,
It's an urge that doesn't wane with time.I will empty you out, set you aflame;
Then you'd know me, Envy is my name.
This was the entry for the 30 days of horror held in 2019 and forms part of the Fall Tales anthology. It won the first place.
