This is my entry for the Poetry Contest for February 2020 (Theme Challenge) - February is Subtle, where we had to write a poem (no genre or style specified) on the subject love. The twist, that word or any of its variations (loving, lovable, lover, lovely etc.) should not be used in the poem. We could use it in the title, but I wanted to challenge myself, so no mention of it in the title, either.
♡♡♡♡♡♡
A teary mother, holding her newborn son,
A father's eyes shining with pride at his daughter;
A sister cheering her brother, at a child's game he won,
A brother wanting to fill his sister's life with laughter.Indulgent grandfather and doting grandmother,
Aunts, uncles, cousins who are partners in crime;
It is not just simple blood that ties you together,
Binding all of you across generations and time.Everyone knows of it, it has enough to its fame;
It comes in myriad forms, why give it a single name?♡♡♡♡♡♡
Achingly beautiful, even if fleeting and ephemeral,
Sparkling in friendship, precious rich and rare;
Present in that emotion, ethereal and eternal,
In those two pm friends, always for you be there.And sometimes, the friendship one holds dear,
Like snow in the spring's warmth, does abate;
For it sneaks in unbidden, but makes it clear,
And instead of a friend, you find your soulmate.Just friends at times, or friendship set on flame;
It comes in myriad forms, why give it a single name?♡♡♡♡♡♡
One passing glimpse, one single glance,
That is all needed to set the heart on fire;
A spark between strangers, you take a chance,
And embark on a course of longing and desire.But not everyone does happiness gain
Or a 'happily ever after' ending do find;
For some it is only heartbreak and pain
Surrendered their heart to lose their mind.For some it is everything, for others, it is just a game;
It comes in myriad forms, why give it a single name?♡♡♡♡♡♡
And this feeling is not always all about good,
Like a chameleon, it hides a million hues;
What it wants is not always what it should,
A war between passion and reason ensues.But when to reason, has the heart ever heeded?
For when their arduous advances you spurn,
It becomes demanding, reciprocation is needed
Unrequited, to murderous hate it does turn;It can be misguiding, on its head lay some blame;
It comes in myriad forms, why give it a single name?♡♡♡♡♡♡
It bestows life but can also take a life,
Like a fire, it could glow or ignite,
Unbridled it plunges lives into strife,
Tempered, it would a beacon bright.It said to make the world go round,
And restless, you chase what you want,
Enchanted by it, joy could be found,
Yet, what you lose would forever haunt.It is beautiful and ugly, selfless and vain;
It comes in myriad forms, why give it a single name?Word count - 390, including those little hearts 😊
And if you, my rare reader, lets me know how I fared, I would be thrilled.
Edited: March 2, 2020 - And this poem won the February Challenge. Yayyy!
