My friend Kawaiiwarrior is also into The Magiclicas and she was telling me about a theory she has that Melissa's parents work for the COM sooooo oneshot time!

I've been listening to "Rewrite the Stars" for the past 3 hours cause it's one of the only songs that have a cover that I own DXD

—————————

It was nearly midnight and Melissa was not expecting her parents to be awake still.

She had just been up to get a drink of water but she decided to investigate when she heard her mom scolding her dad for making too much noise downstairs. Melissa slowly stepped down the stairs, praying to the White Stone that they didn't squeak.

Halfway down the stairs her mom's phone rang. She immediately hushed her husband and hesitated before answering the phone.

"This is Amanda Sterling," it seemed like her mother was cut off by the person on the other end.

"Yes, I am aware this is the report to the COM on Melissa Jane Harmony. We've been doing this every three months at midnight since we adopted her. What else would this be, a charity call?" Her mother snapped before stiffening. "I'm sorry, it's late. Please excuse my outburst," she apologized.

Melissa withheld the urge to laugh if this weren't a bad time. Her mother never apologized, right away at least.

The person on the other side of the phone asked a question. Her mother hissed under her breath.

"Yes, well, no- there has been a development, sir.

There was a full thirty seconds of silence before the receiver made a short burst of noise.

"Melissa recently started attending Everston Academy. In a security protocol we were unaware of, she found out... she found out she is a Magiclica."

There was a flurry of incomprehensible words from the other side of the call.

Melissa's mother had the most uncomfortable expression. "Nothing besides that, sir, I swear. She has no clue to anything else concerning her besides that she has an ability."

Another question was asked.

"I believe it was... what was it, Ted?" Her mother turned to her father.

"Sound wave manipulation. Do they use such big words just to make themselves seem bigger and better?" Her father answered along with a contemplation Melissa assumed might be due to the time.

"Sound wave manipulation," Melissa's mother repeated the needed answer into the phone.

The person on the other side of the phone said something that sounded almost like a warning tone. Melissa realized this would probably be a good time to practice her special skill, even if she had no idea what she was actually doing. She closed her eyes and strained her hearing to try and catch a fragment of what the other side of this conversation was saying. One of her hands glowed blue and suddenly she heard a staticky voice whisper in her ear:

"...she must NOT learn about her true self. I she does, it will be a danger to herself, those around her, and even the COM and the White Stone. Watch her, lie to her, do whatever it takes to keep the truth for her. Understood?"

"What in the world does that mean?" Melissa whispered to herself. My true self? There's more to me than being a Magiclica adopted and raised by Ciphers? She wondered what else her parents had been hiding from her if they knew she was a Magiclica all along.

Melissa's mother nodded before confirming her orders. Ted raised a hand to say something, but Amanda sent him a warning glance that caused him to lower his fingers.

"We knew this day would come, Misses Sterling. We hoped it would come later rather than sooner, but it was inevitable she would find abilities at some point. You were given her as an infant because you proved yourself capable of hiding secrets. Do not fail us,"

The unknown person ended the call.

Melissa's mother took a deep breath and visibly relaxed. Her father still had an uncertain look n his face.

"How long are we going to have to keep this secret?" He asked his wife.

She huffed. "Our entire lives, it seems. But that's the price we have to pay for being able to adopt her. We knew the risks when we applied and it's safer for everyone. The Spero are out there!" She exclaimed, pointing a finger in Ted's direction.

Melissa frowned. The Spero? What do I have to do with the local gang?

Amanda yawned. "I'm going to bed..."

Melissa perked up and rushed up the stairs. As she stepped on the last step it gave a quiet creak. She cringed and hurried into her room, closing the door with her foot and scrambled into her cool bed.

"Did you hear something, Ted?" Her mother asked from the hallway.

"Don't think so, honey," he replied. Her mother sighed before silently continuing on to her bedroom. Melissa knew she wasn't going to get much sleep for the rest of the night while she pondered the vague discussions she had overheard.
