They say that Everston Academy is haunted.
Everyone knew the death of Chase Walker. The story had rocked the nation and kickstarted all sorts of drama over the next few years about the White Stone and Cipher rights and Magiclica superiority. While the revolts had been resolved and everything had calmed down, strange things still happened on the school campus. Around the same time every year, people said they could feel a strange presence lingering about. Some say they saw flashes of magic aura. Some heard whispers of a long-forgotten lullaby. Everston gave the day that Chase Walker died off as a Memorial Day, and after that day all the strange occurrences disappeared.
If ghosts were real, there was no doubt that this was the spirit of one of the two that were killed on that night.
But that was more than fifty years ago. Very few people even knew the significance of the day they had off or the statue in the main hall. Those that were still alive that had known Mister Walker were able to come in to the school on that day and pay respects, and that was it.
Chase looked down on the elderly forms of some of his old friends and peers. He couldn't recognize some of them, nor did he want to. He couldn't bring himself to go down and walk among them like he once did, knowing soon they would pass on while he would be stuck in his youth for all eternity. While he guessed that people thought it was the spirit of Ichiro that haunted the school, he bitterly knew the irony that the anarchist had gotten to move on to an afterlife while Chase was trapped in a fate worse than Miss Canaday's "etabiatin senpaitonum."
Chase was saddened that the one person he knew he would recognize was once again not here. She had never shown up to this day. Chase couldn't decide whether to be bitter, knowing she forgot him, or understanding that she had moved on.
He phased through the second floor balcony he had been overlooking on and passed through the cafeteria walls to get to the garden.
Despite the cruel irony of this particular location on the backside of the cafeteria, Chase happened to rather enjoy the courtyard the White Stone Festival was once held in. After his and Ichiro's demises they had stopped holding the Festival here, and no students ever wandered this far into the garden, which meant that Chase could relax here without being walked through or giving people weird feelings.
Chase hopped up on the pedestal that was in the center of the courtyard. It was very small but made a good stage to sing his favorite song.
"Remember me... though I have to say goodbye... Remember me... don't let it make you cry... for even though I'm far away I hold you in my heart... I sing a secret song to you each night we are apart..."
Chase has kept his last promise, at least. He never forgot Melissa. Even if he couldn't remember her face or hear her voice, what she had instilled in him was always with him. And the song broke the silence that constantly surrounded Chase. It was a strange, cruel phenomenon that Chase existed on a different plane than literally everything around him, so he could see but not touch or hear.
He was still humming his song when something felt different. Chase paused and looked around. It wasn't until he realized that there was a girl staring straight at him that his previous thought process might be incorrect.
"Woah," the girl breathed.
Chase blinked. Suddenly his world was no longer deathly quiet. There was the twitter of birdsong in the trees and a gentle breeze made the leaves flutter. There was the mystical ringing of magic being used that Chase hadn't heard since he faded into particles underneath the White Stone that emitted the same sound ten times stronger.
