monday morning
| EVE'S POV |
i push open the school doors, forcing myself to walk in. i was dreading today, more than anything. i didn't want to talk to anyone, i was just too embarrassed. nobody else's parents act this way, except mine. at least that's what it feels like.
i got there ten minutes before classes started, meaning the hallways were going to be packed with people chatting until the bell rang. i kept my head slightly down, not wanting to run into anybody. i made my way to my locker, grabbing my math book and locking it again. alex usually waits for me at the end of the hall. i glance in that direction, seeing her talking with the rest of the group. brett's arm is over her shoulder as she has a conversation with tyler and blair. my eyes travel to the twins, who seem to be mad as they ramble on angrily to each other.
there's no way i'm walking to all of them at once, that just too awkward. a plan arranged in my mind, i'll stay in the bathroom until first period when they clear out of the hallway. i prepared myself to attempt to hide from them. due to the large amount of people in the wide hallway, i make my way to the bathroom that in my luck, was right across from the group. i walked behind as many people as i could, keeping myself away from their sight. the girls' bathroom door grew closer, and soon enough i was in without anyone seeing me.
| ETHAN'S POV |
the hallways were loud and overcrowded, causing grayson to start a conversation that only him and i needed to hear.
"you're just mad cause you don't have the balls to ask her out, but i do." he chuckled.
"we're not talking about this now." i rolled my eyes at grayson as he continued to make me angry.
i looked away, trying to focus on something else. my eyes caught onto someone across the hallway, slightly crouching behind everyone. i couldn't quite see their face, but it was a short girl form what i could see. finally, i could see her face briefly. eve. what is she doing? before i could call out to her, she opened the door to the bathroom, nearly running.
he scoffed, "fine. pussy." his tongue played with his cheek, knowing i was about to start something.
"that's it." i fumed.
my arms came in contact with the collar of his shirt as i threw him back into the wall behind us. he didn't hesitate to fight back when he threw a punch at my jaw, causing my vision to go slightly blurry from the pain. i gave it back to him as my fist met his stomach.
"what the fuck!" tyler yells, grabbing onto my shoulder, attempting to get us to stop.
"c'mon guys, cut the shit!" brett peels grayson's hands off my neck.
we both step back from each other, out of breath. grayson slams his fist into the locker next to us, throws me a look, and angrily makes his way through the crowd of people that were now around us.
the bell rings as people make their way to their first class, still staring at me.
"what was that!?" brett asks as the rest of them cross their arms, looking at me.
"nothing, he was just being annoying." i shrug.
"since when do you guys fist fight though? it had to be important." tyler says, a little quieter.
"it wasn't, just forget about it." i shove past them, making my way towards the bathroom.
they all look at each other, then walk away.
i get to the bathroom door when i hesitate to open it, looking around. i shouldn't do this, but i'm going to. i turn towards the girls' bathroom door next to me, and push it open hoping that only eve was in here. before i could call out her name, she bumped into me.
her math book fell to the floor, "ethan?" she questioned as i bent down to pick it up, handing it to her.
"what are you doing in here?" she furrowed her eyebrows.
i took in the scent of her vanilla perfume through my nose. i found it hard to focus.
i clear my throat, "looking for you."
"you saw me come in here?" she questioned again as she looked down.
"yeah, it looked like you were avoiding us. i wanted to make sure you were okay." i reached my hand gently up to her chin, picking it up from looking at the floor.
she hesitated, "y-yeah, i'm fine."
i removed my hand, "no, you're not."
"it's not a big deal, ethan." she scoffed, attempting to walk past me.
i put my hand quickly on her waist, stopping her from leaving, "don't lie to me." i latched my eyes onto hers.
she looked down again, "fine. i was too embarrassed of what happened on saturday." she sighed.
"it's not your fau-"
she cuts me off, "that doesn't mean it isn't embarrassing! my parents don't let me do shit and it sucks, ethan. i cant hang out with you or your friends anymore unless i go behind their backs. they hate you and i cant convince them otherwise." a small tear begins to leave her eye as it quickly falls down her cheek.
my heart slowly breaks just watching her like this. i decide to finally speak my mind.
"remember what i said when i drove you home last weekend? how i wanted to change, and be better? how i didn't want to be like grayson anymore? that wasn't bullshit, eve. i promise you. we just need to explain that to your parents, and hopefully they start to like me." i rub the tear off of her cheek.
she sniffles, "you think they'll believe us?"
"do you believe me?" i question, raising my eyebrows slightly as i lean closer to her.
our foreheads touch as she almost whispers, "of course."
