"on a monday?" my mom starts as she stirs food over the stovetop, "shouldn't you all be studying for finals?"
i mentally roll my eyes, frustrated that i wasn't getting anywhere with her. "it's just a small party with a few friends, nothing major."
i let out a breath of stress, unable to look at her fully since i was lying. "please, ill studying every other night this week." my hands grip onto the cold countertop, desperately waiting for an answer.
she puts down the large spoon that was being used to stir, "what time will you be back?"
i smile, knowing i was almost there. "11:30 the latest."
her annoyed look returns, "fine. but your father and i are working the morning shift until about 5, so you'll be coming home to an empty house."
just the thought of working that late makes me exhausted, i seriously don't know how they handle it.
"i trust you to be home on time, evelyn. no slip ups, you still have school tomorrow." her stern voice angers me, but i agree quickly.

hours pass as it grows darker outside. it's getting hotter out as the weeks go on, causing me to choose jean shorts and a tee as my outfit.
the feeling of getting ready alone is weird, considering i don't have alex by my side scolding me on what to wear, or throwing makeup on my face. lately she's been that way, i'm assuming from hanging out with blair.
i decide to put a little effort in myself since i have to make a first impression. but it's most likely going to be guys that i'm introduced to, so there's no real point in looking good for anyone except ethan.
i take a last look in the mirror, startled by a sudden buzz from my phone on the sink.
ethan: look out your window
i walk out of the bathroom, turning towards my large window to see a smiling ethan. he gestures his hand for me to open it. i crawl into my bed, opening the latch.
the glass that separated us is now gone, allowing the warm summer air to flow into my room. "you're insane." i shake my head, laughing as he struggles to get in, stepping off the large tree branch.
"this is my second time crawling up a fucking tree for you, and i don't even get a thank you." he flops on my bed, closing the latch behind him.
i roll my eyes, "you could've fallen, then i would've felt bad."
he stands up from my bed, walking slowly towards me as his body towers over mine. "still would've been worth it."
i feel the warmth of his hands on my waist as they travel up my shirt, pulling me close. his scent mesmerizes me as i rest my head on his chest, the soft material of his hoodie comforting me. a few seconds go by as i take in his presence, not wanting the moment to end.
"gray's waiting for us down the street." his voice is just above a whisper as the raspy sound fills my ears.
i pull myself away, "my parents are still home."
