since i haven't updated in a while (i'm so sorry!!), here's a recap of the past few chapters:

eve finds herself in trouble at a party, causing ethan to of course dream about her. he rescues her quickly from the situation, leaving most everyone at the party suspicious of the sudden interest he has in her (everyone was pretty convinced they hated each other, until now). blair finds the potential of this hard to swallow, considering how obsessed she is with ethan. therefore, she approaches ethan at the beginning of school that next monday, confronting him about it. after he gives her bland answers, she attempts to ask grayson. ethan refrains from telling eve about him and blairs confrontation, causing suspicion to rise in eve's mind. after convincing ethan to tell her about the blair situation, she decides its best if her and ethan "take a break", not wanting others to grow suspicious of their secret relationship.

friday 12pm
(six hours until lake trip)

| EVE'S POV |

it's only been four days. four fucking days of "taking a break" and i'm already regretting everything. i've been trying to take my mind off of it, knowing that i'll just break down if i overthink too much.

"hey." alex snaps her fingers in front of my face, snapping me out of my zone. "what do you think about this one?" she asks, twirling around in a pink one piece as i sit in the small dressing room with her, "rating" her senior trip bathing suits.

i try my hardest not to look bored as i say, "i'd give it a 7.5, the color is eh."

she rolls her eyes, ripping it off her body to put her regular clothes back on. i take out my phone, just wanting to go home after being at the mall all afternoon. alex pretty much forced me to skip school, but i guess it was successful considering i got a few things for the trip that i barely want to go on.

our drive home consisted of pretty much no talking, just listening to music. which is pretty unlike alex, she's the type that you can barely ever shut up. finally, the music becomes lowered.

"so, who are we rooming with on the trip?" she questions, coming to a stop at a red light. i blink a few times, not knowing we had
to pick "roommates."

"why cant the two of us share a cabin? aren't they small?" i ask nervously, re-adjusting myself in my seat.

she squints her eyes as if i were stupid, "they are for four people, two to each room. you're supposed to request who you want to share a cabin with or they'll randomly pair you with two other girls."

the lights turns green and she starts driving again. my mind races, not wanting her to say what i think she's going to.

"we should ask blair and one of her friends." she pretty much gasps at her own idea, yet i stayed un- enthused.

she's the last person on earth that i want to share a cabin with. considering that she practically knows about what used to be of ethan and i, i don't even want to know what she'd do to torture me in my sleep.

"is there anyone else we could ask?" i ask, in hopes that she would change her mind.

alex rolls her eyes slightly, "come on, they're fun! blair isn't as bad as you think she is you know."

it's almost funny how false that statement is.

| ETHAN'S POV |

"blue or black?" grayson holds up two pairs of swim trunks in front of me.

i roll my eyes as if it were obvious, "black for sure."

he continues packing as i finish with my bag, zipping it up. i take out my phone, eagerly scrolling through messages in hopes that i find one from eve. nothing. it's been days of this, i should be used to it by now.

not to mention, ever since we went on our "break", i haven't dreamed about her. for the past few nights my dreams have just been random, regular dreams that haven't come true, and she's in none of them. it's like the pattern was broken somehow.

"ethan?" graysons voice brings me back to reality.

i pick my head up to meet his gaze. "we're leaving in a few to be at the school by six." he grabs his bag along with mine, heading out his bedroom door.

i follow behind, scuffing my feet along the floor. i'm not gonna lie, i was excited for this trip. i thought eve and i would get closer, and maybe our friends would finally get the point that we were together. but it's like we're starting all over again as strangers.

i walk downstairs and out to the car, attempting to let my mind clear. my goal is to have fun this weekend, with or without eve.

i settle into the passenger seat, waiting for gray to finish up inside. finally, he appears from out of the front door, as our mom nervously hugs him goodbye, sending me a wave along with a smile.

he eagerly jogs down the driveway, practically throwing himself into the car. "i'm so fucking ready to get away from this house." a smile takes over his face as he turns the key.

i try hard to smile as well, wanting so badly to give in and let myself have a good time. but a fake smile is as far as i get.

"come on, e." he slumps back in his seat, "she just needs time." the smile on his face fades as he explains what i don't want to hear.

what if time won't fix this?

a few seconds go by as i refuse to respond. i take the aux cord in my hands, plugging it in to play music. i can hear grayson sigh as the first song starts to play. i know he just wants me to relax, and forget about everything, but it's not that easy when it comes to her.

"senior trip 2019, let's fucking go!" tyler's loud voice yells as he hits my shoulder, practically pulling me out of the car.

the school parking lot is mobbed with the entire senior class, pushing their way into three coach busses. i try my best to sound chill as my stomach turns in knots, "hell yeah." my smile fades as tyler walks towards grayson.

my eyes scan around to the back of the lot, finding the one girl that always manages to stick out of the rest.

a messy bun is held on her head by a scrunchy as she rests her hands in the pockets of her sweats. she looks extremely tired, probably due to how early it is. a suspicious look is rested on her face, keeping her quiet from the conversation that her friends were trying to have with her.

it's a look i've never seen on her face before, a look of emptiness.
