Scottie and I woke up super early Friday morning so we could make sure everything was in order for the rehearsal dinner tonight. Shawn and Scottie's immediate and extended family and friends had begun to arrive in Hawaii as well as my family. The rehearsal dinner would be exclusive to both their parents and the wedding party with the exception of my parents, while the other attendees would enjoy a traditional Luau at the resort they were all staying at. As I was helping the staff put centerpieces on the tables I noticed Scottie pacing back and forth looking visibly frustrated. I stopped what I was doing to check on her.
"Hey boo! Are you ok!?" I asked stopping her pacing by placing my hand gently on her arm.
"I'd be a whole lot better if my mother would leave me alone. Just because everything isn't how she would do it, it's wrong. God that woman irks my damn nerves sometimes!"
Scottie's mom, Sonya Monroe had been bossing her around her entire life. Poor girl couldn't even sneeze without asking permission. She had to be perfect at all times according to her mother's standards. Though it pushed her to be a "Self Made Cajun Queen" she just wanted her mom to be a mom.
"Your mother loves you Scottie. She may be a little funny at showing it, but she does. And if I need to, you know Gina crazy ass is always up to putting Auntie Sonya in her place."
We both burst out laughing reminiscing on our cheerleading days when Scottie made captain and her mom would be in the stands trying to mimic our routines like the mom from Mean Girls. My mother would always yell....
"Sonya if you dont sit your Dark Skinned Hilary Banks ass down! If I'm embarrassed I know the kids are!!"
We would crack up laughing every game hearing them bicker every Friday night. But sure enough Auntie Sonya would always sit her ass down after being roasted on by my mother. They were just as close as we were but now their relationship was over the phone since my parents moved to the country and Sonya moved back to Baton rouge with her husband Mr. Tony who owned a restaurant on Bourbon street. Scottie's dad was killed shortly after she was born during a card game gone wrong.
"Thank you Giselle! And if I need to I will definitely call Auntie GiGi. You go on back to the house and get dressed for your sexy ass man. I can handle this and her crazy ass."
"Oh honey you don't have to tell me twice to look good for my man. But bye girl I'll see you in a few."
"Later Sis!"
Hours later the rehearsal dinner is underway. It's being held in a beautiful venue overlooking the water. Walking out to where the dining table was with the elegant decorations next to the ocean was truly breathtaking.
The bridesmaids and Scottie decided we were going to all wear Black. And the Groomsmen and Shawn would wear some form of white to the rehearsal. Since Kenzo wasn't in the wedding he offered to take pictures with his expensive camera. Photography was his hobby when he got injured. He was pretty good at it, and Scottie and Shawn trusted him to take Good pictures tonight.
