Chapter 17 - A Little Mid-Night Meddling

"Jeez!" I said, kicking the forest floor."Why did I have to choose to be burried in the forest!" I complained to the night sky.

Even though I was mad about having to trudge through the leaves and braches in my bare feet, since no one had thought of putting shoes on me, I was glad. This way if there had been anyone visiting a loved one during the night they wouldn't have seen a corpse rise from its grave, commanding a zombie man with a shovel to fill the hole back in. Now, that would've been catostrophic.

I giggled a bit imaging what a scene that would be. Strangely, I didn't feel bothered at all that I hadn't died. The way I was now....felt oddly right. I shrugged my shoulders and continued to walk through the forest in the ankle-length gown I wore. The feel of the fabric on my skin was great, but I didn't care that it was a dress. I needed to find something to change into.

So on my first list of business, I decided to go rob the nearest house. It wasn't like the people would miss clothing as much as they would if I had stolen their money, so I was sure they wouldn't take much notice of it. My eyes captured a bit of light from a house off in the distance. A distance that I was sure no regular human eyes could see. Feeling playful, I decided to run the distance there.

It was if the scenery had moved around me instead me moving. I was hundreds of yards away from the house and the next minute I was standing at the edge of the forest in their back yard. My eyes looked up to their windows where the light I had spotted came from. Someone still used a nightlight, because I couldn't hear any of the household members awake and moving. The most peculiar part about my new and improved hearing was that I could also hear their hearts beating, which caused my throat to dry rapidly.

After checking that everyone was asleep and that nosey neighbors wouldn't see me walking across their back yard, I advanced. This time I did it at human speed like I had all the time in the world. If I had to guess, it was early morning around three or four. The door knob was almost too easily to get passed. It was locked with the regular lock and deadbolt---intruder proof. As much as I wanted to test my newfound strength, I didn't want a mysterious break and entry report coming up and the cops after me.

Instead, I willed the door to open just like I had willed the man who'd unfortantely walked by my grave to dig me up. The locks clicked open and I entered in satsifaction. The house was like any regular household, full of furnature and cluttered items that the family deemed important in their lives. I walked over to the stairs and proceeded to go up them. The parent's room was located on the first flood, but I needed clothing that would fit me.

I could oddly sense that there were two rooms upstairs, one of them with two people inside sleeping. They weren't children, their hearts were too strong for that age. It surprised me that my mind could point out the difference already between them. I brushed the thought away. Just something else I would have to get used to.

As I walked the upstair halls so quietly that not even the floorboards creaked underneath me, I wondered how much time since my death had passed and what day it was today. I knew that I passed away in August, so that if I had awoken within the same month the school year would've started up already. In that case, I needed to be out of this house before the parents awoke to wake up their children. I tip toed over to the room where the two sleeping figures were and opened the door a fraction of an inch.
