Chapter 19 - Causing Trouble Around Town

"Have you been able to see our mysterious guest?" Carlisle asked Alice for the fifth time today.

"A little bit. I can tell where the locations are in town through the fuzzy images, but I can't tell any of the people she's spoken to." The pixie hair mumbled, rubbing her temples. She was really pushing herself to the max to see that much."There was a man downtown, a group of people near the city hall, and someone's house."

"Emmett and I can go." Edward volunteered right away with Emmett right behind him.

"All right. You two can go, but only visit the first two locations." Carlisle allowed.

They headed off to the garage right away to take one of the vehicles in town.

Carlisle turned back to Alice."Focus on seeing the house clearly. If we can determine who the people who live there are, then it might give us a clue about the newborn." he said.

Pixie hair nodded and closed her eyes to consentrate.

Edward and Emmett entered downtown. Both of them traveled together and didn't leave each other's sides. Newborns were stronger than a single vampire, but they weren't as strong as the combined forces of two experienced vampires. They moved down the street, trying to determine the shop with the man and the group of people near the bench.

It took them several shops before they stumbled upon the right one. Edward had memorized the metal picture that Alice had been able to conjure up in her mind to know that they had the right man. In her mind, the person was elderly, wearing a white shirt and kahki pants, with a dark green shop apron on top wearing a white and red striped service hat on his head.

The two vampires entered the shop and approached him.

"Hello. How may I help you?" The man said, turing towards them at the sound of the bell his door made.

"We want to ask you if you've seen a girl, and this might sound crazy, with red eyes." Emmett told it to the old guy straight, earning a hard nudge in the ribs from Edward.

"A girl with red eyes? No, I don't believe I've seen one like that." The old man replied."But I did see a young miss come in." He added, just in case that was the information they needed to get a lead.

"A young miss?" Edward repeated."Could you tell me what she looked like?" He asked.

The clerk made a face."No, I don't remember her, but she did buy a pair of black sunglasses off of me."

"Thank you." Edward said and grabbed Emmett's arm to get him to leave the shop with him.

Once they were outside, Emmett complained."Hey! What was that for?"

"There was something in his mind telling him not to remember. It was like it was implanted in his mind." Edward explained as they walked down the side walk to the city hall."He was able to remember that the girl was eighteen years old and wearing a white top and blue jeans, but beyond that it's been erased."

"Strange." Emmett agreed."Why did you think she wanted the old coot to forget?"

"She's probably frightened at what she's becomed and is trying to hide all knowledge of her exhistance, which it good for us. The Volturi won't drop in on us as long as she keeps herself a secret from the humans." Edward elaborated."But that's also why we need to find her. She's only doing it now because she's afraid. Once she realizes she doesn't have anything to be afraid of...." he trailed off.

"Ohhhh....." Emmett mouthed, understand what his brother was talking about now.

"Let's go to the next location. Maybe there are people there who remember more about her." Edward said, walking beside Emmett.

They went to the city hall, looking for the group of people who had encountered the young lady. A group of skateboards were hanging out around a bench, the object Alice had seen in her vision.

"Excuse me, but you wouldn't have happened to see a young woman pass by here?" Edward asked them politely.

"No."

"Nah."

"Sorry."

"Nope."

"Meh."

Some of them answered, looking at each other and not thinking much about what he had said.

The one who was sloutching the most on the bench suddenly shot up."Oh, there was a girl who came by who said that her folks and her had just moved in town." he said.

"Did you remember her name?" Edward asked urgently.

"Uh, I think it was Zalenia." the skater dude responded.

"Thanks." Edward muttered before walking away with Emmett.

"She picked a wierd name for herself." Emmett commented casually as they returned to their sports car and climbed back in.

When they had returned to their home, they told Carlisle the news.

"So she picked the name Zalenia?" He repeated, wanting to make sure that he'd heard it right.

"It's strange? Isn't it?" Emmett joked in the background.

"How has it gone for you?" Edward asked, ignoring the body builder.

"Alice?" Carlisle turned, asking the pixie haired girl who sat in the middle of the couch indian style.

"I see an orange cat, but that's about it." She muttered, defeated by the exhaustion.

"A cat? Didn't Lilia's Aunt Phelicia and Uncle Tom have a cat?" Bella asked from her spot across from Alice in a chair.

"What would a newborn vampire want with them?" Jasper asked the obvious question on everyone's mind.

"Who knows. All we can do is visit them and see if they remember anything." Carlisle replied.

Edward and Emmett made for the door again.

"Hold it. I'll go. I was their niece's doctor after all, and they'll be more open with me." Carlisle stopped them before they were out.

They moved back in the room."Shouldn't I go with you?" Edward asked for two reasons. One because he could read minds, the other for just in case the newborn was still there.

"No. I should be the only one to go. They're still in mourning." Carlisle countered.

He moved out the door and left the family in the living room.

Carlisle

"Can you tell me exactly what the young lady looked like?" I asked Lilia's aunt and uncle.

We were sitting in their living room, each of us on different pieces of furnature. The room was oddly quiet and the orange cat Alice had seen was sitting on the back of the chair Phelicia was in.

"I don't know." Lilia's aunt answered in a frightened voice."I remembered some girl visiting and she scared me for some reason. Now I can't remember a thing about her."

Phelicia's husband Tom had already explained that he thought he saw a figure come into the house, but didn't get a good look at them. Both of their memories had been tampered with. This girl had a dangerous power if she did this good a job.

"Thank you for trying anyway." I told Phelicia. She nodded in return.

I left the house and returned to my car to go home to the others. They were probably waiting anxiously for me to return.
