Chapter 21 - Newborn Worries
The day after Carlisle returned home from visiting Lilia's aunt Phelicia and Tom, it was like the newborn had dropped off the map. Neither Alice or Edward could pick up on the girl. It was like she had disappeared. It couldn't be that she was killed. There was no sign of other vampires in the area or that the Volturi had stopped by for a visit.
Even if she had moved onto a different town, that shouldn't had kept Alice's ability to peer into the future from finding her. She had simply vanished. The Cullens kept up the search for her. They had a feeling that she was somehow blocking Alice's power. Maybe she was strong enough to alter a vampire's memory if she couldn't erase it. She could make the pixie haired girl miss her everytime she went to look for the newborn.
When that didn't prove to be true after a couple of days, they changed their angle. No one could keep their power up for that long, unless she was like Edward and just did it naturally all the time. However, the mind reading vampire said that probably wasn't the case. He suggested that maybe they could only 'see' or 'hear' her when her emotions were strong. In that case, she'd been keeping herself mellow so that she wouldn't have her thoughts cast out to Edward or picked up on Alice's radar.

After eleven days of waiting for her to slip, it finally happened. Alice found her in the town eating. She didn't know anything about her new self, so she had returned to eat thinking that would get rid of the nagging hunger that ached her belly. It wouldn't. The girl needed blood, but she didn't understand that yet. Sooner or later though, she would attack an innocent and kill.
That was exactly why the Cullens needed to find her before it was too late.
Carlisle along with Edward, Bella, and Jasper had just about to leave the house when Alice had another vision. Carlisle had been about to go so that he could talk calmly with the newborn, and Jasper would help him by calming the girl down. Edward would have been there to translate her feelings for him and Bella just in case she tried to mentally attack them.
With Alice's new vision, this changed everything. She saw Demetri, the black haired vampire that could track a person to the end of the world once he had their mind's signature, with Renata, the female vampire that caused those around her to go into sudden confusion if they attacked her. It was surprising that Aro had convinced his little puppet to leave his side. This both shocked the Cullens and made them think twice after going after the girl.
"What does this mean Alice?" Carlisle asked when Alice had explained the situation in full detail.
"They want to recruit her." The pixie haired girl said."Aro, wants to recruit her." she repeated, drawing out the Volturi leader's name.
"Why?" Edward asked for everyone when they were too stunned to answer.
"He likes that she has....multiple....talents." She explained it the best she could.
"Multiple?" Carlisle echoed, phasinated by the piece of information.
"It's how she's been able to confound their see-ers." Alice replied."They had to send one of their trackers over here because we litterally disappeared off the map to Philip."
Philip was the newest addition to the Volturi and Aro's pride and joy. His talent in his human life had been to see things the way other's saw situations, earning the ability to see through other people's eyes when he was changed into a vampire.
There was no distance requirement to his powers. All he had to do is know your full name and what you looked like to locate you and look through your eyes to see what you were doing. The only thing that kept his powers from not working was that he couldn't see through vampires with abilities classified as shields. Since Bella falled under this category with the ability to shield her mind, Philip couldn't look through her eyes.
"How?" Carlisle asked, wondering how such a thing was possible. How could that one girl make such a large area inaccessable to Philip?
"Whatever mind hers happens to touch off of is instantly protected." Alice explained, using the words that Aro had used himself according to her.
"I see why he would want her now." Edward said, angry that the Volturi leader would use her like that.
With the girl's protection, no mind reader would be able to tell what Aro or anyone he wanted shielded were thinking. It was the same for any vampires who could see the future. This girl's power surpassed both Edward's and Alice's abilites. She was a precious jem in a pile of fake stones to Aro.
"We can't let Aro have her." Bella voiced.
"What can we do to protect her? We can't stand alone against the Volturi. They'll come here again and eliminate us for good this time."Carlisle said."And I doubt our fellow covens would come to help us this time with destruction certain."
"We don't have to." Edward said, surprising everybody---even Bella."All we have to do is convince her to come to our side. If she could protect them, that also means she could protect us. All abilities of the mind would be useless against her and who knows what her other powers are. Alice did say she had many."
"Yes." the pixie murmured quietly.
"It's genius." Carlisle beamed at the chance of hope for them yet.
"So all we have to do is get her on our side. Great. But hasn't everybody forgotten that we don't even know where she is." Rosalie angerly reminded the group.
The whole room went from cheers to silence.
"Alice, where do you see her?" Carlisle asked quickly, practically spinning to face her once he'd recovered.
"All I see is the woods." She said, throwing her hands up in the air in fustration.
"Edward?" Carlisle turned to him next.
"She's very worried. Two vampires---Demetri and Renata---are chasing her." He replied.
"Already?" the coven leader said, almost sounding lost.
"The newborn is confident she can fend them off if she has to, she just doesn't like that they followed her back into the woods." Edward elaborated.
"I see..." Carlisle said, changing to a more thoughtful tone once her status had been clearified.
"So what are we going to do?" Bella asked him.
"Wait here, see how things go. Aro likes to give his prey a warning before he reels them in. He likes to see them try to struggle to get away." Carlisle's words were harsh, but they were the truth.
"Waiting? That's all we're going to do?" For once the angry one this time was a steamy faced Alice instead of Rosalie.
"It's all we can." Jasper said, putting a hand on her arm.
She calmed down, but she grumbled because Jasper had made her.

When Edward announced that Demetri and Renata had left after giving their warning to the girl, everyone in the room relaxed.
"So when are we going to go and confront her ourselves?" Alice asked, this time a little calmer.
"Have you seen what she's going to decide?" Carlisle answered her with a question.
The pixie eyes looked up, then returned to normal."No, her mind is still confused. There's no telling where she'll show up next." Alice sighed.
So the Cullens would just have to wait a little longer.
