Chapter 26 - Unwelcomed Reminders

After spending a few hours with the family in the livingroom, I retreated to my private bedroom to be alone. The calm silence put me on edge and made me nervous all the time. I walked down the hallway and opened my door to find two changes.

The first one was that I had a bed, but the more obvious change was that all my drawings were hanging on all three walls. Evening sunlight poured onto them, illuminating them just like in my bedroom when I lived at my Aunt Phelicia's and Uncle Tom's. At the same time I was elated that I had them back, I was also saddened that I made my relatives forget about me. I thanked Carlisle silently, feeling in my bones that he had been the one to retrieve them.

I stood at the door way, soaking each of the drawings in before stepping inside and shutting the door behind me. With nothing to do, I sat down on my bed. Sitting turned into laying as the minutes passed by. I stared up at the white cieling as I was flat on my back, my arms folded over my stomach.

I thought about the things I learned about only hours before. The two articles had been perfect descriptions of what I had gone through. Death by heart attack, revival, and changing. What confused me was that the Alp was also related to the werewolf because it could shapeshift into an animal form. I understood the vampire part as I learned about that yesterday. Succubus were known to have limited mind powers that allowed them to hypnotize their prey, and I'd also displayed that when I had gone around town.

I wondered what I could shapeshift into----if the legends were true. Who knew what was myth and what was fact. Before I knew vampires exhisted, I thought they couldn't go out in sunlight. The idea was silly, but I never expected them to sparkle. It still didn't make any sense to me. Now I was stuck trying to figure out what applied to me.

One thing both texts had forgotten to mention, was that my kind's eyes were sensitive to sunlight. Articifial light, in other words light bulbs, didn't effect me at all but for some reason I couldn't stand looking outside for very long. I was glad when the sun finally set over the horizon so that my room was no longer bathed in it.

I was shaken out of my thoughts when I heard knocking on a door. It took me a while to realize that it wasn't mine, I'd heard it from the front. My senses spread out, and I felt the life force of a vampire at the door. I got my my feet as I recognized the Cullen family moving around within the home. They were all moving towards the front of the home. I got the feeling that they were curious, although Edwardo was perfectly calm. He had already read the mind of the visitor.

I was the last to arrive, hidden behind the eight others. Carlisle was the first to reach the door, opening it up without even checking through the eye hole first.

"Eleazar? To what do I deserve this visit?" The doctor asked, speaking in a tone that told me they were old friends.

"I've come to bear the worst of news." The vampire man said, his red eyes darting into the room. It was the first time I'd seen one of his kind that fed on humans, killing them in the process.

The look on Carlisle's face changed."Has something happened to Carmen?" he asked worriedly.

"No, no." he shook his head."I've only come as the messenger."

"The Volturi?" The leader replied too quickly.

The man replied bluntly."They called in a 'favor' from long ago."

"What is the news?" Carlisle changed the subject, one hand on the door.

"They nicely ask that the girl comes to visit them in Volterra, Italy." Eleazar told him."Carlisle, could you please tell me what's going on?" He asked the doctor kindly.

"It's...complicated." he replied, one hand still on the door, refusing the other man silently from coming in.

Then it happened. The vampire's red eyes slowly trailed over to my right and saw me through the gap between the Cullens. His eyes widened as if he was seeing something beyond me, like when Alice had her visions.

"I...I must be leaving." He stuttered, spinning around fast.

Eleazar was gone before Carlisle could ask him what was wrong. I couldn't stop replaying the image in his eyes. I knew that sometimes the Cullens family worried about others of their kind, but I didn't know vampires could actually be afraid of something other than themselves. It made me rethink about myself.

"Don't think about it too much." Edward cut in before I could go any farther.

The rest of the family turned around and faced me at his words. Carlisle was the only to approach."Edward's right. Don't let Eleazar's actions judge for the rest of our kind. He doesn't know what your really like."

"I don't think I get what you're talking about...." I trailed off, feeling very confused.

"He has the ability to sense others distinct abilities that they brought with them when they were human." Edward explained for me."For example, Jasper was very good at reading other's emotions and changing them to his perspective. Now he can manipulate them dirrectly through their minds."

"I'm not sure how it works for your kind Lilia," Carlisle picked up where Edward stopped."but over the small time you've been here with us, I believe it's the same. You've displayed an amazing ability to draw others near to you or away depending on how they treat you."

I hardly knew what to say to that."I don't think it's that amazing of a power." I muttered.

"In the course of two days, I feel as if I've known you for much longer than any of my closest friends." He continued."I'm sure many of the others agree with me."

I watched and saw that everyone silently shook their heads or simply looked at me and knew it was true. Even Edwardo, as much as I liked to tease him, seemed to agree with the majority.

"So what are we going to do about the Volturi?" I took the advantage during the break in the conversation.

"Truthfully, I do not know." Carslisle replied.

"Well, I'd like to meet them." I stated bodly.

I earned looks from all of them.

"It's obvious they won't leave you alone unless I do." I added.

"Lilia, when they mean visit, they mean permanetly." Alice spoke seriously to me for the first time. There was no hint of her voice that she was joking.

"I know." I said honestly."I'll just have to tell them that I'm not a collectible item. Plus, if I can scare Eleazar I'm curious to see their reaction to me when they see me in person."

Emmett grinned."I might be tempted to go with you."

"No one is going over to see the Voturi." Carlisle cut in."Except for Lilia and myself."

Muscles looked disappointed when the doctor decided only the two of us would be going. All the girls, excluding Alice, looked worried for me. The pixie hair was beaming as if she was imagining the Volturi members faces. Jasper and Edward just smiled.

"So, tomorrow?" I suggested.

"Tomorrow." Carlisle agreed.
