Delaine
4 months later
I arrived at the doctor’s office. I was going to meet Alicia for an ultra sound and as the godmother, I wanted to be there.
I got inside; Alicia was sitting in the waiting room reading a magazine.
“Hey.” I greeted.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Nothing.” I leaned down to give her a hug. I sat in the chair to the right of her. We gossiped a bit and ten minutes later, a nurse came out, calling her name.
“Alicia Cruz?” The nurse called out.
We got up and walked towards her.
“That’s me.” Alicia confirmed.
“Right this way.” She led us through the back into a room with a monitor and everything. There were seats and a bed where Alicia can lay down.
“Dr. Conrad will be in with you shortly.” She said right before she closed the door.
We sat there patiently for the doctor to come in.
“I’m nervous.” She admitted.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because, like I’ve been really stressed out lately, wedding plans, we’re looking for a new house, work, Chris, and that whole drug thing.”
“You need to chill out. You don’t have to do everything at once. Break things down. You know, stagger everything. Everything doesn’t need to be done right now.”
She smiled. “Okay.”
Her obstetrician walked in right then. She was a short little white lady that looked in her mid- thirties.
“Good afternoon, ladies. How are you doing?” She asked.
“Good.” We answered in unison.
“That’s good. Alicia, I’m going to need you to get on the table.”
Alicia did what she was told and the technician lifted up her shirt.
Dr. Conrad then placed a thin paper over her thighs and turned on the machine. She went into one of the cupboards and got a tube of gel. She went and sat down on her stool. She opened the tube.
“Now, this’ll be a little cold, but bear with me.” She warned, softly. Her voice was very squeaky and an octave higher than most people’s voices.
She squirted the gel onto Alicia’s protruding belly and Alicia winced at the coolness.
Dr. Conrad took the transducer probe and placed it onto the part of her stomach that had the gel and moved it around trying to find the baby.
The baby came onto the screen in black and white. I gasped at the sight of the little baby rolling around in my best friend’s uterus. Tears welled up in my eyes.
The heartbeat played a rhythm. “The heart sound good.” Her OB said.
She rolled it around some more. “There you can see the head.” She pointed to a circular, white shape. We leaned in to see it closely.
