A month later

My eye flickered open at the sound of Tyler crying. I groaned loudly, and reluctantly tossed the covers to the side. I swung my legs to the side of my bed and wiped my eyes to wake up a bit.

I glanced over to the clock. It read 3:11.

“Fuck my life.” I whispered. I got off the bed and walked over to Tyler’s crib. I picked him up and brought him to the bathroom to change him. A couple hours ago, I fed him a bottle, so you know it was time for it to come out.

I laid him on the counter and changed his diaper. After I changed him, he quieted down a bit and I set him back into the crib and washed my hands.

I lay down in my bed and tried to catch the last hours of sleep before I had to bring Chris home from the hospital at nine.

Delaine drove us to the hospital. We got out the car and I unlocked Tyler out of his car seat. We walked into the hospital and up to a nurse at the front desk.

She looked at me and said, “Hi, How may I help you?”

“Hello, I’m here to pick up Christopher Brown.” I spoke.

“Oh, yes. I’ll direct you towards his room.” She stepped from behind the counter and walked us to his room.

She opened the door to his room and we walked through. Chris was sound asleep. He looked so peaceful, and beautiful.

“Mr. Brown.” The nurse spoke, trying to wake him up. He stayed asleep and she repeated herself and shook him. He awoke from his slumber and wiped his face with his good hand- he broke the right one when he fell that night.

I handed Tyler to Delaine and walked quickly towards Chris. “Hey, baby.” I murmured to him.

“Hey, beautiful.” He replied. We both smiled and I gave him a long kiss.

“How you doing? I asked.

“Fine. Better now, knowing that I can come home.” He answered with a smile.

“Well, let’s go.” I urged. Everyone chuckled, even Tyler.

After 30 minutes, we were on our way back to our apartment. Delaine pulled into the guest parking and we all got out. She helped Chris up the stairs and I carried Tyler.

I opened the door and Delaine aided Chris onto the couch.

“Lemme get me son.” He proclaimed.

“Fine.” I muttered. I handed Tyler to him and watched as he interacted with Tyler. It was so adorable, the father-son relationship.

“Well, I gotta go, duty calls.” Delaine told us. She tossed her keys in her hands.

“Bye, thanks for driving us.” I answered, gripping her in a tight hug.

“No problem. Love you guys.” She said.

“Love you too.” Chris and I answered at the same time. She left and Chris and I started our lives as parents.

Delaine

I got home from work at around 7 or so. I took a long and hot shower. I missed my parents and my family so, after I finished getting out the shower, I threw on some sweats, and a tank top and went to my parents’ house.

When I pulled into the driveway, I saw a few lights on inside: one down stairs, and two upstairs. I knocked on the door just, so I’m not barging in. After a few minutes, no one came to the door.

I didn’t see any cars in the driveway, but then again they could be in the garage. I knocked on the door again, and still no answer.

I used my key and opened the door, and a faint sound of the television flowed through the foyer.

“Dad, Mom?” I called out and no one answered, again.

I walked upstairs and the sound from the TV got louder. I opened the door to my parents’ room and my dad sat at the edge of the bed with a syringe in his hand.

“Dad, what are you doing?” I shouted.

“Shit, Delaine, what are you doing here?” He asked, stunned.

“I came to, check up on my parents. Why the fuck do you have a needle in your hand?”

He dropped it, and walked over to me. “Delaine, please let me explain. This is not entirely what it looks like.”

“What are you talking about? It’s exactly what it looks like. You’re fucking shooting up heroin.” I yelled.

I ran down the stairs and out to my car. Multiple questions plagued my brain and I had no answer for them.

I pulled out the driveway and drove home.
